It's no wonder that this 125-mile long chain of little islands are often described as jewels. The sea is always so close on both sides that the Keys really do seem to sparkle. The people are laid back, and so are the animals, it seems - lazy deer and alligators saunter across the road as drivers wait patiently, cameras at the ready. The sub-tropical climate is slightly Caribbean, but the Keys are really like nowhere else. They have their own special atmosphere.

San Francisco looks even better in real life than it does in the movies. Crammed into a relatively small area surrounded by bay and the Pacific Ocean, its streets can be explored on foot, taking in the various neighbourhoods - Chinatown, Japantown, Italian North Beach and Russian Hill. Down at Fisherman's Wharf, you can meet sea lions, sample delicious local seafood and take the ferry to Alcatraz Island, home of the world's most notorious prison. Golden Gate Bridge must be walked over and an afternoon in Golden Gate Park is a delight. Sonoma and Napa wine valleys are slightly north with Carmel and Monterey 2 hours south down beautiful Highway One.

The new 21st-century Las Vegas is nothing like the Vegas of old. Amazing new hotels have sprung up in recent years setting new standards in service and facilities. The cheesy entertainers of yesteryear were shown the door, as permanent theatres show world-class entertainers such as Cirque du Soleil�, Blue Man Group and Celine Dion. The best magicians, singers, impressionists and tribute acts in the world are here too. There are brand new thrill rides, sumptuous pool complexes with wave machines, lots of golf courses and amazing shopping from designer boutiques to out-of-town factory outlet stores.
