In a nutshell
Georgia's lush coastal islands form a string reaching down the Atlantic coast from Savannah down to the Florida border. Jekyll Island is one of four known collectively as the Golden Isles. It was originally bought in 1887 as the private club for a group of millionaires including Rockefeller,
Venderbilt and Macy. Take a guided tour of their opulent, restored mansions on the waterfront. All Georgia beaches are public and there are 10 miles of them here - if you've come to relax, find your spot and lie back, soaking up that southern sun and laid-back atmosphere. You may like to do some shell-hunting ' its a popular pastime on the island.
If you're planning something more energetic, a huge tennis centre, 4 golf courses and the Summer Waves Water Park bring you all kinds
of man-made active options, but there are plenty of natural thrills to be had, too. You could try deep-sea fishing, or take a kayaking trip. There are nature trails to explore in the maritime forests, and 20 miles of winding bicycle paths. Loggerhead sea turtles nest here from May to August, at which time you can join a guided turtle walk along the beach in the evening.
