The glorious Maine Coast is so craggy, if you stretched it out straight it would run for 3,000 miles! This is the world lobster capital - stop at a 'lobster pound' and eat it freshly caught - a local will show you how to get the meat out of those awkward nooks and crannies. As you drive the coast, the aromas of pine and salt will waft through your windows. There are all kinds of boating opportunities ranging from trips to outlying islands to cocktail cruises, and beside the nautical pleasures you'll find rustic seaside communities, beautiful beaches and sparkling lakes. When summer becomes 'fall', the blaze of leaf colours is astounding. And at all times of year you can shop for your life at Kittery and Freeport, the latter home to the cavernous LL Bean, the state's most famous store.
