In a nutshell
The 23 miles of sun-kissed beaches have ensured that Fort Lauderdale remains an exceptionally popular destination. But recently, things have become even more exciting. A dramatic beautification has taken place, and it's now one of the coolest places around. Sidewalk caféés, chic boutiques and trendy restaurants are everywhere. There's classy retail and dining at the Beach Place complex, along with a vast range of nightlife, and all kinds of entertainment on the very popular Las Olas Boulevard with its live jazz bands and village atmosphere. Once known as the Venice of America, the area has a criss-crossing canal system with 400 yachts, and water buses providing great value and convenience. Out of town, the Sawgrass Mills shopping mall is the biggest in Florida - an essential visit to pick up those designer bargains. For a change of pace, airboat rides and alligators can be found in the natural haven of the Everglades, only a 20-min drive away.
