In a nutshell
This dramatic mountainous isle, known as the 'Garden Isle' because of the rich green vegetation, is a beautiful mixture of lush scenery, unspoiled beaches and forested interiors. All along the southern and western coasts you'll find dry, sunny weather with pristine beaches to enjoy sunbathing and water sports. In contrast, the island's central volcanic peak, Mt Waialeale, is said to be the wettest place on earth! A hike through the verdant forests, looking at the indigenous wildlife and giant plants will make you feel like Indiana Jones discovering new archaeological treasures - and you wouldn't be far wrong because Raiders of the Lost Ark was actually filmed here! Other highlights to pack into your sightseeing itinerary include Wailua Falls, Fern Grotto and the dramatic splendour of Waimea Canyon. There is also the rainforest and perfect shoreline of Na Pali. The best way to get around is on bike or foot, exploring every fascinating nook and cranny on the island. Alternatively, those with sea legs will enjoy marvellous snorkelling and diving opportunities.
