In a nutshell
Once the gathering place of Hawaiian chiefs, Oahu is now a sun worshippers' paradise, with people coming from all over the world to sample the city delights of Honolulu and the beaches of Waikiki. In town you'll enjoy excellent shopping, both in malls and at little outdoor stalls selling clothes and jewellery - you can even dig your own pearls from oysters and have them made into earrings! There are plenty of restaurants and bars too - many overlooking the beach and sea beyond. Feeling energetic? Hike to the top of Diamond Head, the crater at the end of Waikiki Beach, which offers some amazing views from the top! Outside the city there are some pristine, near-deserted beaches to enjoy. Surfing beaches include Banzai Pipeline (for the experts) and Waimea Bay - where bodysurfing is de rigueur. Hanuama Bay is a perfect, crescent-shaped bay with clear, aqua waters offering superb snorkelling conditions. Other natural wonders include pineapple plantations, Waimea Falls and the fascinating Valley of the Temples, while a trip to Pearl Harbour is interesting and poignant.
