Destination informationDestination information

One of the ‘out’ islands of the Bahamas – life continues pretty much as it has done for centuries in the Exumas. A natural paradise, it is a 120-mile collection of tiny jewel-like islands, set in some of the clearest and most beautiful water you’ve ever seen. The people are incredibly friendly too, welcoming you to their home not as a tourist but an honoured guest. The serenity and beauty of this island can be explored in many ways; diving, bicycling or hiking. If the world below water appeals, you’re in for a treat at the Land and Sea Park, the first of its kind in the world and truly one of the natural wonders of the world. Teeming with wildlife, make sure you bring an underwater camera to capture the huge variety of fish that populate these waters as well as the colourful display of coral reefs. The land area is just as fascinating, serving as a refuge for several rare and endangered species. Cave diving is a popular pastime on the island, swimming in water that is fresh, pure and free from salt. Angelfish Blue Hole, just outside Georgetown is the most popular cave diving site known for its abundant barracuda, coral, sponges and, of course, angelfish. Also try Mystery Cave beneath Stocking Island and Thunderbolt Grotto, the latter featured in many a Bond movie! Great Exuma is the anchor of this archipelago and where you’ll find the laid-back capital of Georgetown. As well as a straw market to browse around in search of local handicrafts, there are various restaurants to relax in including Big D’s Conch Shack and Eddie’s Edgewater. Take a boat from here to Stocking Island for idyllic beaches and spectacular views from the bluff. A dream destination for so many and quite rightly so, the Exumas is nothing short of heaven on earth!

Eats & drinksEats & drinks

Conch (pronounced konk in the Exumas) is in plentiful supply, sprinkled with lime juice and local spices. At Club Peace and Plenty in Georgetown try pan fried grouper with tomatoes, sautéed onions, sweet peppers and a hint of thyme – a favourite dish that is truly delicious! Kalik is the local beer and very tasty too or try ‘the switcher’, a soft drink made with limes that is very popular.

Getting aroundGetting around

Most of the cays that make up the Exumas are only accessible by boat, easily arranged via your hotel. Georgetown is easily explored on foot or fix a price with a local taxi driver who will take you on a tour, throwing in a running commentary for free! Alternatively, hire your own car, stopping en-route to admire the various sights and sounds. Motor scooters are also available for hire or peddle your way round on the non-motorised variety!
