Tobago Holidays 2013 / 2014:
Only a holiday break on the gorgeous island of Tobago allows you to experience the beauty and majesty of the oldest protected rainforest within the Western Hemisphere. This island has been a nature lover’s paradise for decades. A selection of David Attenborough’s “Trials of Life” series was filmed here, at the Little Tobago Seabird Sanctuary, and the famed aquatic explorer Jacques Cousteau was enchanted by the island’s coral reefs. Many of these incredible reefs are located just off the coast, making snorkelling a popular holiday activity for many visitors. After dark, head to “Sunday School” - it’s not what you think! This huge Sunday night street party pulses with soca rhythms as the boulevard comes alive with dancing.
Sightseeing ideas
Let’s face it; you’re going to be spending a lot of time at the beach during your Tobago holiday. Some beaches are particularly good for water sports, others have great restaurants and bars, and still others are quiet and secluded - perfect for a lazy afternoon. Englishman’s Bay is a treasure, perched just at the edge of the rainforest. At Pigeon Point, you can take a snorkelling lesson or book a glass-bottom boat cruise. Man-O-War Bay is very sandy and great for swimming.
You’ll find a lot more than tranquil beaches and glistening seas in Tobago, however. Despite its small size, the island is surrounded by one of the most amazing coral reefs in the world. Many holidaymakers come here just to snorkel and dive in the famous Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park. You can put on a mask and flippers for some serious face time with the reef’s inhabitants, or explore this otherworldly ecosystem from a distance aboard a glass-bottomed boat. Once you’re back on dry land, spend a day touring the island’s ancient forts, hike through one of the many nature reserves or take in a bit of culture at an art museum or gallery. Be sure to leave plenty of time to soak up the local flavour in one of Tobago’s charming villages - Castara, Charlotteville and Scarborough are a few of the most popular.
If you love bird watching, Tobago holidays offer more than 210 unique bird species to look out for. There are also three different kinds of marine turtles that make their homes on the island, whale watching, and plenty of sea life hiding in the reefs.
The ultimate excursion on a holiday in Tobago is a visit to Trinidad, the island’s closest neighbour. If Tobago is an introvert, Trinidad is its outgoing sister. Close in geography but a world apart in atmosphere, Trinidad is a vibrant, lively island, the birthplace of calypso music and world famous for its annual carnival celebration. You’re sure to find something there that you will love.
