Looking for a relaxing holiday amid fascinating history and rural Americana? Want to enjoy village charm, friendly people and beautiful scenery? Then New England is the place for you. Come in the autumn to witness nature’s spectacular display of iridescent ‘fall foliage’, with the leaves transformed from green to thousands of shades of orange, gold and red. In the winter, there is skiing in the mountains, and fireside comfort in the inns of Cape Cod. Spring and summer are for hiking and biking around the lakes and mountains, or for heading to the beach. Rhode Island, the smallest state of the Union, has a fifth of the nation’s historic landmarks. In Newport, today the world’s yachting capital, you can explore the lively history of sea trading and smuggling, and relax by night in the blues bars. Salem, up the coast from Boston, has beautiful buildings and a museum dedicated to infamous witch trials held there in 1692. The ‘flexed arm’ of Cape Cod is where the Pilgrims made a pit stop. They were terrified by the gigantic, devilish-looking lobsters, and refused to eat them, but they were awestruck by the cod ‘as big as a man’. Today the Cape offers wonderful beaches, including the huge National Seashore, charming fishing villages and rural inland settlements complete with duck pond and village green. In the rolling mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont, you can explore winding country lanes, magnificent forests and pretty villages with clapboard houses and covered bridges. The rugged coastline of Maine, with its lobster pounds, fishing communities and lighthouses, is the place for some of the USA’s best seafood. The 6 states of New England are relatively small, so a couple of weeks exploring them by hire car or coach is an ideal option. Have fun, now…
