Step back in time with a visit to the charming, picturesque town of Mystic - a historic 19th-century seaport full of weather-beaten clapboard houses, quaint village greens and tall ships in the harbour.
In a nutshell
Built up around the mouth of the Mystic River, the town was once a highly profitable whaling and fishing community. Learn more about its fascinating history at the Mystic Seaport Museum, where costumed guides talk about their crafts and trades. You can jump aboard the Charles W Morgan, the last surviving wooden whaling ship in the USA, and take a trip along the Mystic River on the Sabino, a pretty 1908 steamboat. Or simply wander around the antique shops, individual boutiques and stop for afternoon tea at one of the cafés that line the main street. We have several inns and hotels to choose from, including the Inn at Mystic, where Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall took their honeymoon.
Eats & drinks
As you can imagine from a seaside town that used to thrive on fishing, the cafés and restaurants offer an abundance of delicious, fresh seafood, from fried clams to shrimp scampi, crab, lobster and innovative filets of fish. Step back in time at Schaefer's Spouter Tavern where all the staff are dressed in 19th-century clothes, or have dinner overlooking the river at Seamen's Inne Restaurant and Pub.
