Destination informationDestination information

Walk around the 200 acres of pretty grounds with their ponds, rolling fields and mature trees, and you'll get a real feel for what life was like around 1830 in New England. Spookily convincing actors in period costumes greet you and tell you about their lives, while demonstrating their crafts, cooking and farming methods. You can also take a boat ride on the Quinebaug River and dine in the museum's historic taverns.

In Sturbridge itself, wander down Main Street and browse in the many shops selling antiques, handicrafts and jewellery. In summer, the area's orchards offer pick-your-own peaches and apples, with local produce to buy including maple syrup, cider, doughnuts and pies. Walk in the woods of the Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary, and for man-made thrills drive to Agawan to sample the roller coasters and water park at Six Flags New England.

The area has plenty of good restaurants and taverns for hearty local fare. There are 2 taverns at Old Sturbridge Village - the Oliver Wight Tavern, a new addition, includes genuine 19th-century recipes on its menu.
