One of the 13 original states of the USA, South Carolina certainly treasures its past. From the War of Independence and the Civil war to the Civil Rights Movement, it has been at the heart of it all with historic festivals, military sites and museums galore. Indeed, there are more than 1200 places listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the states distinctive architecture reflects European, African and Caribbean influences. Inhabited since 3,000 BC, one of the best places to gain an insight into the daily lives of Native Americans, European Settlers and African Slaves, is the Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. Colonial plantations such as Brookgreen Gardens, Middleton Place and historic Charleston, give an insight into the grand old days. For more up-to-date attractions, the Hard Rock Park, the first rock ‘n’ roll theme park in the world, is a great day out, with 140 acres of rides, live shows, shopping and dining. For beach lovers, Myrtle Beach boasts over 60 miles of shimmering white sand with swimming, dolphin spotting and scuba diving all on the agenda. For more sports on land and sea, head to Hilton Head Island for paddling, canoeing, turtle watching and fishing. There are also championship golf courses aplenty for the enthusiast. With something for everyone, from the culture vulture to the sun-worshipper, South Carolina is nothing short of superb! Fantastic seafood, excellent continental cuisine and local delicacies – South Carolina is a nirvana for foodies! Local specialities include she-crab soup, pecan pie and barbeque chicken. And make sure you try the local Palmetto Ale, perfect to sip whilst watching the sunset . Wherever you go, you’ll find a good selection of restaurants serving world cuisine, but don’t forget to sample that good old southern cooking!
