Perhaps a day at the lively beaches of Ocean City, or an exploration of the little fishing villages of Chesapeake Bay, can be interspersed with fun in the state's largest city.

You stay in the lovely Inner Harbor, whose wharves and warehouses have been replaced by an attractive waterfront promenade and gleaming mall, complete with great restaurants and quirky shops. It is also home to the Maritime Museum with a collection of refurbished ships including USS Constellation, the US Navy's first ship.

Baltimore's National Aquarium is one of the biggest attractions in the USA, and a visit is essential. Environments include a South Pacific reef, rooftop rainforest garden and Open Ocean Exhibit, which has some rather scary-looking sharks. Trained dolphins and whales also put on a fantastic show.

Wander the elegant neighbourhood of Mount Vernon, and take a water taxi to explore the restaurants of Little Italy. For trendy nightlife and restaurants, try the areas of Fell's Point and Canton.
