Often described as the world’s largest outdoor museum, Luxor is certainly packed with historic sights, however, that’s not all on offer. Ancient temples and vast tombs sit alongside modern hotels with world-class amenities, there are no beaches as such but superb palm-fringed swimming pools make a great alternative and at night relax in one of many sophisticated bars and lounges – the perfect refuge after a busy day spent sightseeing! Sitting on the banks of the River Nile, Luxor is opposite the incredible Valley of the Kings and close to the Temple of Karnak with its forest of pillars built by Ramses II. Other show-stopping antiquities include the illustrious Luxor Temple and fascinating museums housing amongst other things objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Once you’ve had your cultural fill, head to the city’s lively bazaars to look for bargains – remember to haggle though, the stall holders can get quite offended if you don’t! Last but not least, a cruise on the Nile should be considered – passing temples and monuments in villages that have hardly changed in centuries.
