The high-altitude forests are home to a variety of game, including elephant and buffalo as well as the rare and beautiful bongo antelope. Treetops is located in Aberdares – the waterhole there provides the perfect place to spot game coming to drink during the night.
Amboseli National Park
Amboseli is set against perhaps the most impressive backdrops of all – Mount Kilimanjaro. The park is also renowned for its elephant population and herds of wildebeest, zebra and impala which graze on the open plains.
Lake Nakuru National Park
This soda lake is home to up to a million flamingoes. The park surrounding the lake provides an important sanctuary for both black and white rhino, as well as lion and buffalo.
Lake Naivasha National Park
The waters of the lake draw a great range of game including giraffe, buffalo, colobus monkey and a large hippo population. A boat trip on the lake is a great way to enjoy all that it has to offer.
Masai Mara National Reserve
Kenya’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, the Masai Mara, comprises over 1,500sq km of open plains, woodlands and riverine forest. Every year it plays host to the wildebeest migration from the Serengeti between Jul and Oct. The reserve is home to the ‘Big Five’ and the game sightings here are plentiful.
Samburu National Reserve
Samburu is very dry and arid and is home to several endemic northern species, including the gerenuk, a long-necked antelope, the reticulated giraffe and grevy’s zebra. Big cats can also be found here, as can elephant, hippo and crocodile.
Tsavo East and West National Parks
Tsavo as a whole consists of 10 million acres of wilderness with herds of elephant, as well as lion, buffalo, giraffe, impala, kudu and possibly rhino. Mzima Springs in Tsavo West is a highlight, where you can view hippo from an underwater hide.
The Wildlife Conservancies
The local Masai communities set aside these areas for wildlife reserve, so the habitat could be protected and wildlife conserved.
Kisite Marine National Park and Mpunguti National Reserve
Kisite and Mpunguti Marine Parks are located on the south coast and cover a marine area with four small islands surrounded by coral-reef. The surrounding waters have well developed coral gardens and a large variety of fish while the small islands within the parks offer important breeding habitats for birds and the rare coconut crabs.
