Rejuvenate yourself in mineral pools, enjoying mud wraps and massages. Visit the Pohutu geyser with its 30m-high spray, and at Tamaki Maori village, receive a traditional Maori welcome and enjoy a delicious hangi feast.
The stunning Lake Taupo is situated south of Rotorua, with a breathtaking backdrop of the Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro volcanoes.
Down at the southern end of North Island is compact Wellington, New Zealand's capital, set between the blue harbour and green-forested hills. Sample the many cafs and restaurants, and visit the national museum, Te Papa.
