Want to experience the genuine outback? The Top End of Australia's Northern Territory is one of the regions where you can, and at your own pace!
In a nutshell
Your starting point for an exploration of the Top End will be Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory. Its tropical climate and plentiful beaches give it a resort atmosphere.
Just 32km south from Darwin is the Katherine Region, where searing red desert sand gives way to the lush green of a tropical wonderland and the star attraction, Katherine Gorge.
A little further south is Litchfield National Park, where you'll find monsoonal rainforest, waterfalls and gigantic termite mounds.
East of Darwin is Kakadu National Park, World Heritage listed and where Aboriginal people have lived for over 50,000 years.
