Description
Day 1: Launceston - Cradle Mountain (150km - approx 2 hours)
Pick up your Thrifty rental car at either Launceston airport or city depot and drive to Cradle Mountain, where you will overnight at Cradle Mountain Lodge. Cradle Mountain is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area. A short walk from your lodge is the Visitor Centre, with a good source of information regarding available walks, from gentle nature rambles and day walks to the famous Overland Track. (RO)
Day 2: Cradle Mountain
Enjoy a full day at leisure to enjoy the spectacular scenery around the lodge. (B)
Day 3: Cradle Mountain - Strahan (155km - approx 2 hours 15 min)
Depart Cradle Mountain and head southwest on hilly and windy roads to reach Strahan, where you will overnight at the Strahan Village. Strahan is the gateway to World Heritage Southwest National Park, one of the world's most beautiful cool-climate rainforests. The town is situated on Macquarie Harbour, the departure point for cruises on the Gordon River. (RO)
Day 4: Strahan - Hobart (290km - approx 3 hours 45 min)
Depart Strahan and drive via the Lyell Highway to Hobart, where you spend the next 2 nights at the Quality Macquarie Manor. Hobart is the smallest of Australia's state capitals and is located on the Derwent River, one of the deepest harbours in the world. The old city centre clusters around Sullivan's Cove, backed by wooded slopes rising to the often snow-capped peak of Mount Wellington, making it a delight to explore. (RO)
Day 5: Hobart
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Hobart and its surrounds. Perhaps visit Bush Mill Pioneer Park or the Tasmanian Devil Park. Other natural attractions on the Tasman Peninsula include the Blow Hole, Tasman's Arch and the Devil's Kitchen (unusual coastal rock formations). If you are interested in the history of Tasmania, the penal settlement of Port Arthur is about 100km from Hobart. (RO)
Day 6: Depart Hobart
Your self-drive tour concludes today after you return your Thrifty rental car to either the city or airport depot. (RO)
