About SafarisAbout Safaris

Safari is a Swahili word meaning 'journey'; it's very probably the number one thing on your list of stuff to do in South Africa, in fact it may have been the main reason you're coming to this wonderful country, and we're giving you plenty of opportunities to go on!

SAFARI!SAFARI!

On Safari With Virgin Holidays
The thrill of seeing the "Big Five" and many other animals as you travel through some of the most stunning landscapes on earth makes your safari holiday a magical experience.

Your Safari VehicleYour Safari Vehicle

We use specially designed and strengthened modern safari cruisers which have large pop-up roofs for extended wildlife viewing and photography. On safari, only 7 of the 9 seats are used, so you're guaranteed a window seat and a great view!

What to PackWhat to Pack

Baggage compartments are generally quite small, so it's advisable to use soft-sided bags, rather than conventional suitcases. Comfortable, loose cotton clothing is best suited to the hot, humid climate. Bring a jumper, fleece or sweatshirt for early morning drives and evenings which can get quite chilly. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sun cream are essential during the day, and don't forget mosquito repellent for the evenings. Take plenty of film and spare batteries for your camera - the photo opportunities will be endless! You can generally store your main luggage safely in Nairobi or Mombasa if you are on a twin-centre holiday.

Your Driver/GuideYour Driver/Guide

All our safaris include the services of an English speaking driver/guide chosen for their enthusiasm to show you their country.

Your AccommodationYour Accommodation

As a rule of thumb, most accommodation is based around sites that were once hunting camps, scout observation points or colonial retreats. This means they are located in the most exciting areas, with stunning views or excellent game viewing. Standards of food and accommodation are generally good, and although service can be a little slow it's always with a smile. Rooms tend to be simple but comfortable with private facilities including a shower. All lodges have their own restaurant and bar where there is often evening entertainment, some also have a small swimming pool. Accommodation in tented camps is of a good standard in permanently pitched tents with private facilities.

Expect the Unexpected!Expect the Unexpected!

A safari is an adventure where the unexpected can (and does!) happen. Roads can be very dusty during dry season or you may get stuck in the mud during rainy season. Occasionally adverse road conditions, mechanical problems or a change of lodge may cause an itinerary to be varied or run in reverse, although it is rare for the content of a safari to be significantly altered, or for game viewing to be affected.
