WEATHER HERE

Springing forth from the Gulf of Thailand like a perfect pocket of tropical paradise, Thailand’s second most popular island, Koh Samui, offers up all manner of delights that will leave you satisfied, exhausted and hungry for more.

Thanks to the island’s location, about 25 miles from the mainland, the climate is as unique as the local Massaman curry is delicious and if you fancy exploring you’ll easily manage a round trip in about a couple of hours. The pace of life is as laid-back as you like it and days spent snorkelling, kayaking or occasionally glancing at sun-bleached paperbacks are pretty much standard practises.

The pace of life is as laid-back as you like it and days spent snorkelling, kayaking or occasionally glancing at sun-bleached paperbacks are pretty much standard practises.

Luxury comes in the form of resorts and spas with the Anantara Lawana Resort and the Six Senses Samui both providing accommodation and facilities that are completely coated in loveliness. If you’re looking for peace and quiet then the northern villages of Ang Thong and Mae Nam are a safe bet however, if you want something a little livelier then you’ll probably prefer the east coast where there’s lots to do both day and night. Chaweng is the livliest resort with hotels located right in the heart of the nightlife. Also further down on the east coast is Lamai, which is still lively but more sedate than Chaweng. Hotels on the west coast are quieter with stunning views.

More about Koh Samui

Eating out

Whatever you’re into: traditional Thai, international menus, gourmet cuisine or beach barbies, you’ll no doubt find it on Koh Samui. Resorts such as InterContinental Samui Bann Taling Ngam Resort offer a huge range of first-class cuisine and include some stunning views to ensure you feel extra special. Out of resort you’ll find an eclectic and exciting variety of restaurants and heading north to Fishermans Village, Bophut presents one of the best areas to eat on the whole of the island. As you’d imagine, freshly caught seafood is a staple in these parts and with the added ingredients of coconuts and spice there’s many a recipe that’s been requested from local chefs.

Best for families

Most resorts have excellent facilities for families, with child-friendly swimming pools, well-maintained playgrounds and kids’ clubs, ensuring everyone can rest easy, at least for a few hours. Resorts such as the Nora Beach Resort and Spa or Peace Resort are perfect for families and if you’re looking for plenty to do and loads of space to do it in then you won’t be disappointed. Out of resort Koh Samui has loads of options for day and half day trips including: an aquarium, a tiger zoo, butterfly gardens and sedate jungle treks to uncover your little one’s inner adventurer.

Best for couples

If there’s just the two of you then hiring a car and driver for the day to explore the island is an excellent option if you’re looking for sublime sights and seclusion. If you prefer to stay local then hideaways like Le Meridien Koh Samui Resort provide some essential luxury time including an amazing floating ocean pier and a whole host of sumptuous spa treatments. If you fancy an evening of guilty pleasures then head to the bustling beer bars and neon nightclubs of Chaweng or, alternatively, if you want to get all mushy over candlelight then the restaurants of the north come highly recommended. If you really want to get involved in the local culture then there’s no finer option for couples than the rum distillery in the south and many an afternoon has been lost in the company of the friendly staff and free samples.

Weddings/Honeymoons

Island tranquillity, cocktails at sunset and lashings and lashings of sensuous spas: welcome to the romance and pure indulgence of Koh Samui. This is your chance to really get your life together off on the right foot and if you’ve ever fancied getting married with the scent of fresh flowers on the breeze and the warmth of the sun massaging your soul then right here’s where you do it. The Centara Grand Beach Resort is ideal for getting hitched with all the trimmings and from traditional Thai to western promises, no opulent orchid leaf is left unturned when it comes to making your special day an incredible and unique experience.

Please note: To marry here you will need to spend 5 night in Bangkok first, where the legal ceremony will take place, then combine with a week or two in Koh Samui where you have your blessing ceremony.

Something different

Most festivals and parades on the island centre upon Buddhism and from Makha Bucha in March to the Visakha Bucha Day in May; you’ll be treated to plenty of colourful ceremonies and decorative parades to celebrate the path to paradise. Other popular and traffic-stopping events include Songkran water festival in April and Chulalongkorn Day in October when not much gets done other than general rejoicing and merrymaking. If you’re looking for something slightly different then buffalo fighting occurs around most major festivals and is completely harmless and tends to involve monks and beautifully decorated buffalos. Throughout the year, in areas like Bophut, Lamai and Meanam, once a week, streets are closed to traffic so locals and visitors have a chance to walk freely amongst the various vendors offering everything from salted eggs to wrap-round sarongs.

Weather / Best time to go

The island boasts a relatively alternative climate to the mainland and as such sometimes when the rest of Thailand is suffering from rain storms, Samui’s resplendent in sunshine. In general, Koh Samui barely dips under 30°C throughout the day and nightly temperatures average out around 25°C. October to December is the best time to remember your brolly although it rarely rains all day and the short, sharp downpours can actually be very refreshing and clear the air of humidity. The rest of the year is pretty much dry and steady.

Seeking adventure

If you’re looking to unleash your inner-Indiana Jones then Koh Samui has some excellent jungle treks that will have you reaching for your whip and trusty hat as you explore overland on foot. If you’re into your diving or you fancy doing a PADI course then nearby Ang Thong National Marine Park has a wonderful world of underwater adventure just waiting to be discovered. Tropical fish, coral reefs and safe conditions, all-year-round, make Koh Samui an awesome area for first-timers and gnarly old experts alike and hiring a boat and skipper to indulge in a bit of island hopping is an excellent excuse to get away from it all. Local marine animals include: blacktip sharks, manta rays and the, lesser-spotted, loggerhead turtles, so make sure you remember your underwater camera.

Sight Seeing Ideas

It really is hard to resist the translucent hues of the ocean and as such you’ll discover plenty of excuses to take the plunge and dive into the warm water surrounding Koh Samui. Deep-sea diving, snorkelling with mask and flippers or hiring sea kayaks at sun set are all awesome activities and even if you just fancy a paddle there’s no finer way to tantalise your toes. Aside from messing about in the water you’ll find plenty of markets, temples and monuments to give you an insight into the local culture and, when the day is done, evening meals overlooking the beach provide the perfect finish.
