Read more Just back from 11 nights at the Centara Karon......it was our first time in Thailand and Phuket and we couldn't have wished for anything more from the hotel location, food and also the level of service we received from all the staff. We were pleased with the location of the hotel our room and everything a short walk to the beach and there was plenty of bars and restaurants around the hotel. Our holiday at the Centara and Karon itself is one we'd rather forget. On one of the endless nights not being able to sleep because of the rock music blasting from the bars on the doorstep mixed with... Read more the incessant barking of the stray dogs outside the hotel followed by the 6.20am sunrise lighting up the room due to the curtains being far too small I had decided to write a lengthy review of this place warning others about the lack of sleep. Instead I decided to wait until I returned home in the hope things might improve.....sadly they did not. However instead of a lengthy review here is what we found as pros and cons... Pros View from room Staff Cleanliness Cons Precious little sleep during our 10 day stay due to noise levels from bars trying to drown each other out... the Surin lounge bragged to me that their live rock band played every night until 4 am....it was and can be heard very clearly from higher floors. Stray dogs barking until 6 am when the sun came up. Curtains too small to cover the windows at 6am when the sun came up. Expensive Wi Fi charges when every restaurant and bar starting with O'Tooles Irish bar only 20 yards from the hotel door all provide free Wi Fi. With no Wi Fi and expensive drinks we never saw a single soul in the hotel bar at any time and felt quite sorry for the staff who had to stand in there waiting....they were very polite though both times we ventured in. Breakfast was ok but below average for a 4 star resort....3 times during our stay our coffee etc was cleared away whilst we were at the buffet. Exchange rate at the hotel was nothing short of hilarious and I had to look twice to make sure I was seeing correctly...8 baht less per £ meaning an average of 16% less than anywhere else we found. You expect a premium rate in a hotel but 16% is just too much. The whole place just seemed to lack any sort of vibe or atmosphere perhaps due to being deserted most of the time as people migrated to the town for cheaper food, free Wi Fi and entertainment. It felt to us that the policies and prices at the hotel were designed to extract the maximum revenue from the few people who remained in it rather than reduce prices therefore preventing people from eating elsewhere, creating a better atmosphere and creating revenue in a more hospitable way, after all it is a hotel proiding hospitality....and the Wi Fi...come on it's 2013 guys! On a final note we consider ourselves to be reasonably well travelled having stayed in everything from the Burj al Arab in Dubai to a mud hut in Senegal and we do know that 4 star in one country is not necessarily 4 star in another and we always embrace these differences but we struggled here as it just didn't seem pleasant. Having returned to the UK I have read a few reviews and it seems that more people are now mentioning the noise levels as being unacceptable and perhaps it was my fault for not noticing this before. We had considered speaking to the management about the noise issues but the noise is external and is beyond the hotels responsibility or control and reception had already informed us that the only other rooms available were family rooms where a lot of children were staying so it could be noisy!! In the end we were glad to get back to Bangkok for some peace and quiet! Read less
