You have to keep remembering that the rates charge will vary considerably amongst the guests, so the value for money will also vary considerably. The small things that could make a difference to... Read more the guest experience include; ensuring that the full complement of towels in the room are available each day without asking, admitting there is a problem with the WiFi and advising when it will be fixed, not running out of beer glasses at night and substituting plastic, not running out of steak/salads/plates less than 1/2 way through BBQ lunch, not running out of gin/vodka/limes/straws at the bar, fixing the dodgy looking electrics round the property. On the positive side; great staff, management who are trying to improve the hotel, fantastic beach, great weather, lovely gardens, resident mongoose/humming birds/occasional green monkey/1000 Egrets that land next to the hotel every evening. Would love to come back, but would need to be sure that the small things are in place. Read less
Just back from an excellent 12 night stay at the Discovery in Holetown. This is the 3rd time we have stayed there and quite frankly it offers great value for money. The biggest asset it offers are... Read more the people who work there. The GM and his staff at all levels do there very best to look after you and are genuinely interested in the guests. As mentioned in other recent reviews the GM is very visible and the vibe is great. The food is very good indeed for a "budget hotel",the rooms are spacious and sportlessly clean, the grounds are lovely and give off an air of calm. The Government beachworks are due to be finished very shortly which is great but they are extremely necessary in order for Barbados to retain it's main source of income ...tourism. Again the whole team at Discovery Bay (and indeed also the contractors)did there best to minimise the disruption as we were decanted to an adjacent beach 2minutes walk. Holetown is good fun in the evening particularly Sunday evenings! During our stay this time any problems were dealt with as quickly as possible and communication was great The hotel is not 5 star, but what it is, is a great basic value for money hotel,in a lovely location on the beach near a vibrant area (the diggers will be gone this week) with the best team of staff> Read less

We stayed in Discovery Bay for 11 nights in November (3 girls). In fact we are regrettably travelling home this weekend. We had read reviews before we travelled and were some what nervous abut what... Read more would await us. The negative reviews that are posted about this hotel are not a true reflection of what the hotel offers. It is not 5 star luxury, it is not the best hotel on the island, but what it does offer is a personal feel where you are made to feel so welcome and nothing is too much trouble. The staff at the hotel make the place, and the new manager is extremely "hands on" and visible, more so than another hotel I have ever been too. They genuinely want to know how things are and if it's not right, they want to fix it. We stayed on an all inclusive basis. The food was fresh and very tasty. There was never an over whelming choice, but what they had was always flavoursome and of a good quality, the cakes are beautiful! We ate out on a number of occasions and the food in the restaurants in the surrounding area were of no better quality than we experienced in the hotel. The rooms are basic in style and a little dated, but have everything that you need. We were lucky enough to be in the beach front rooms. Unfortunately there is currently some work taking place on the beach where there are a number of diggers which start work early, but these are due to be gone in the next week. Once the view is cleared of machinery, the beach front rooms will be an amazing place to sit and watch the sun set. The evening entertainment is low key, a few bands/ singers in the evenings, but this suited us fine. We hired a car on two occasions and travelled the island which is great fun and you get to see untouched Barbados. It's inevitable that you will get lost, which is all part of the fun. But just look for the sea and you'll be back on track in no time! We also did a catamaran trip with " Jammin", which was a fantastic fun day, drinking rum punch and swimming with turtles. Oistins fish fry on the south of the island is a must, it takes place every Friday night. Eat fish caught by local fishermen and watch the locals dance the night away.. It's more fun when you join in too. It costs just $2 barbados dollars on the bus (the equivalent of about 70p each)! The island offers as much or as little that you want to experience.. The great thing about Barbados (compared to other Caribbean Islands I've been too) is that there are places to walk freely too in the evening and you are not confined to your hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to come back again to Discovery Bay, and join the many other people who have stayed in this hotel for their second, third, forth time and more in many cases. I have stayed in hotels all around the world, some large and some small, but Discovery Bay has a homely feel that makes you feel so welcome that other hotels don't seem to be able to match. I would definitely recommend this hotel.. But it is all about expectations. Barbados is chic, elite and a place of the rich and famous. This hotel is not in the same leagues as the big hotels on the island, but it offers you so much more if you don't expect it to be "all singing all, all dancing". The price you pay reflects that. Keep up the great work Discovery Bay! Read less
