My family & Friends (Group of 25) visited Sol Palmeras, Varadero from November 11 to November 18, 2013. What a great experience!!! From beginning to end the staff was nothing short of friendly and... Read more SUPER helpful. This is our sixth trip to Varadero, Cuba and I have to say that this hotel surpassed all of our expectations. We had requested certain rooms with connecting doors (small children) - when we arrived at the hotel - they had a document outlining in detail our requests. Check in was fast and easy. Our room’s connecting doors were locked – called reception – within ten minutes it was unlocked. We had requested a group dinner (I was very hesitant when I received confirmation in Canada - as my experience in the past, upon arrival, has been "no reservations requested - group too large to accommodate"). Hotel went as far as sending a letter of gratitude and confirmation of dinner reservations. Tables were ready upon our arrival – great dinner “Steak House”. Beach area was absolutely lovely – one person all week trying to sell sky-diving – basically no vendors. It’s also a more secluded area of hotels. Tipping was NOT “expected” as many other hotels have adapted to “no tip, no service”. Our group ranged from 9 years old to 80 years old – EVERYONE had a great time! Buffet restaurant staff, for the most part, was only too eager to try seating our group together (something we appreciated but didn’t expect). Food was great and very tasty (everyone’s taste preferences are different but they always had an assortment of fresh meats and fish). Average age was an “older / seasoned” crowd – not many “young ones”, but it didn’t seem to phase our 20-year olds. An older hotel … but very clean and when extra items were requested (towels, etc) – no issues, no hesitancies (far cry from other hotels). Could it use some updating? Sure – but really – how much time do you spend in your rooms? All, in all, a great experience and a hotel I’d recommend over and over! Read less

Read more floor spacious Jr.suite with a beautiful view of the well keep grounds and pool was very clean, the Room Attendand, Livia did an excellent job paying attention to details. Being myself in the hospitality industry I appreciate Livia's personal touch, the towels folded into swan or elephant and the welcoming and farewell notes left on the coffee table. A very special thanks to Mr.Raynier Sanz Perez and his staff, the team responsible for all the activities and entertainment. During our stay we had the opportunity to meet and chat with Luiz Manuel who took a few moment from his heavy 24/7 workload as the boss of all the Red Cross Life Guards: A great ambassador for Varadero Tourism. Throughout our stay we were able to dine at every a la carte restaurant. we enjoyed the excellent food and impeccable service at every location, however, the beef filet at the steakhouse deserves a special mention, it was well presented, very tender, tasty and done to a perfect medium rare, just as ordered. The breakfast and lunch buffet in the main dining room offers an abundance of cold and hot food and a selection of fresh fruit juices to choose from, there is something for every taste. The freshly baked croissants and coffee in the lobby lounge is a good option for a light breakfast. Cheers to poppy, Jaime, Sandy and Jesus at the pool bar their outstanding and friendly service. Overall, as in our past stay at Sol Palmeras it was a great vacation and definitely will return. Read less
We traveled on November 8 to 15 with my family that include our 20 year old daughter and our 8 year old daughter. We decided to choose the Sol Palmeras because of the bungalow and what it offer... Read more . Unforntunately it wasn't exactly what we expeted. First day was difficult since our bungalow futon was not working and i slept on the coach while the rest of the family slept altogether in the bed. we were changed the next day to a 2 level bungalow which was amazingly confortable and spacious. Ask for bungalow 110 or 122 they are 2 level bungalow, i know that they are some more like that but i don't know wich numbers. Our little daugther had a relative rough time since no kids speak either french or english as most of the tourist came from south america (Argentina). There's also a lots of European. we had a few day of good weather but it was really windy most of our stay. To compare vs our trip to Breezes Varadero last year, we found that the personal was more friendly at the Breezes, the food was also better and the Breezes. Another thing regarding the buffet is that there's many stations where you can get your foods so sometime it took me more that 10-15 minute to go back to my place and start eating. We've bought the jeep safari expedetion because i wan't to do some snorkeling but again as last year (catamaran)we could not apparently because of the weather. Please note that the jeep safari was still nice but i strongly suggest that you don't pay the 25$ CUC for the photos and DVD of our expedition. The DVD is not compatible with north american DVD players and there was about only 15 photos of us, the remaining photos (238 total) was from other expedition that we didn't do. The mexican A la carte restaurant was awful but the chineese was good. We tried to book others but they were all full everyday. For the drinks tyhe selection is very very limited. again last year at the Breezes Varadero we had a much much more selection of drinks but at the Sol Palmeras we were only limited to rhum and crystal beer, and they put so much rhum in your glass that it is too strong. For coffee we were very desapointed that there was no coffee machine in our room and the only place that served coffee (4 kind + 1 expresso) was at the lobby and again nothing to compare vs Breezes who have excellent selection of coffee. my wife and older daughter went to Varadero village and and a bad experience they were ask 1$CUC just to go to the bathroom and many people in different kiosk were rude with them (traveling with 2 girls in Varadero village might no be a good idea). Our kids was expecting much more for animation and fun but we were disapointed again for the lack of animation for the kids. the language barrier was a huge issue. Although many disapointing situation the overall vacation was correct (average) we had good time at the beach and pool and it was nice to be altogehter for this trps. Read less
