TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
I'm not really quite sure how to write this review. My husband and I had a pleasant stay here but it didnt quite meet up to my expectations. I travel a lot on business so understand how an... Read more exceptional 4 star hotel should be. There are a few negatives that could be improved upon but I'll start with the positives: Friendly staff - everyone says hello from the housekeeping maids to the life guard on duty at the pool Free wifi in all parts of the hotel - nice to be connected whilst away Lovely large rooms/suites - lots of space, empty fridge which is handy for keeping water cold, large patio doors for view over the hotel grounds/sea/beach.. Excellent massage by Spencer! Location - lots of restuarants, bars, supermarket nearby (within 10 mins walk) so plenty of choice Negatives: Housekeeping was sporadic and a bit hit and miss. We didnt get any housekeeping service for one day of our stay despite having the 'please service my room' sign on the door all day. On another day, we were supplied one bath towel despite the fact that there were 2 of us staying in the room. I phoned housekeeping to ask for another towel, half an hour later, a maid arrived with a jug of milk and mistook us for someone else who had asked for milk! Overall the service wasn't great throughout the hotel. One evening we decided to have a take-out and eat in our room. We went to the reception to ask for cutlery and plates and they directed us to head over to the restaurant and ask the staff there. Now, I may be a bit picky, but I would've expected the receptionist to liaise with the restaurant himself and arange for plates and cutlery to be sent to our room. Little things like this are what makes a hotel stand out (for good and bad reasons!). The bathroom is amazing but very badly designed. Every time we had a shower, the whole floor would flood as there was a gap between the shower screen and floor for water to escape. I dont know if this was a standard issue or just particular to the room that we had but it was a nuisance. One morning I asked for pancakes for breakfast. What I recieved resembled something that a 5 year old would make, they were barely edible. I'm not sure what happened to the regular chef that day but the man who made these for me was definitely not the usual chef. Not what I would expect from a breakfast costing approx $30 each. There are a few reviews on here that mention that the Virgin crew stay at this hotel. I didnt think this would be a problem as noone had raised anything negative about this. However, my experience with the virgin crew staying there is the one thing that would stop me from revisiting the Royal. It was lovely and quiet when there were no crew there, enough sun loungers for everyone, relaxing atmosphere, calm and quiet even with young children about the poolside. Then the Virgin Crew turned up and the whole poolside turned into a 'hang out' for the crew. They basically took over the pool, were loud and rude, shouting across from each other and really just spoilt the whole experience for everyone else. It almost felt as if I had entered into a club 18 - 30 holiday! During happy hour, my husband went to the poolside bar to order drinks and the barman totally ignored him and served the virgin staff first as they were regulars and made more of a fuss! I have to point out that not all Virgin Staff behaved in this way, just the ones that we unfortunately encountrered at the start of our stay. Towards the end of our stay, a different set of crew turned up and they behaved much more appropriately. Whilst I didn't expect total peace and quiet in the resort, I didnt expect a group of loud and annoying 18-30 yr olds to turn up and take over! Had I known this, I would certainly not have booked the Royal. Overall, we had a pleasant stay at the Royal, most of the niggles were minor (apart from the Virgin Crew) but given the price and my experience, there are other resorts that I would choose or recommend over the Royal. We returned the Royal in St Lucia in mid October, for our 4th visit. This time we were staying in a wonderful suite with a big balcony facing the ocean. The suite had been completely renovated and the bathroom was outstanding with state of the art modern design. The shower was simply wonderful. Every time we come to St Lucia and stay at the Royal we talk about the friendliness of everyone working there. Whether it be the staff in the lobby, in the restaurants or the maids. We already know some of the staff because of us coming back again and again. This time we always got a little evening treat to our room, which was very nice. We also were really pleased with the breakfast and our favourite was the St Lucian saltifsh and bakes with the local coco tea. It's quite addictive :) The location right on the beach is superb, beautiful clear water good for swimming, snorkling or/and sunbathing. Outside of the hotel you have Rodney Bay, where there are many things to do.But for relaxing and romancing, the hotel itself is the best place to be. Sitting on the balcony watching the sailboats on the water during the day and then the beautiful sunset at night is an experience I would not want to have missed. It's like being in Paradise. We just came back home and we are already planning my next visit :) Read less

Read more We returned to the hotel in June this year to celebrate our wedding anniversary ( having got married at the Royal 5 years earlier).... and it was just as amazing! The staff are incredible and welcomed us back. Nerissa who had planned our wedding was so helpful and could not do enough for us. We even had a room upgrade to one of the fabulous suites overlooking the beach. These rooms have been modernised and were extremely spacious with high quality furnishings. The food in the hotel is as excellent as it was previuosly. It was very quiet whilst we were there - however that suited us perfectly! All just perfect and would recommend as an ideal location to celebrate! We will be back for our fourth visit! Read less
This review is strictly related to the dinner offered by the Royal on New Years eve and not the accommodation. We were in St. Lucia for New Years eve 2012, and as such, were trying to select a... Read more place for dinner. Most restaurants offer a prixe fix dinner for around $120 US per person. Some include alcohol, others do not. We wanted something on the beach, and Royal appeared to be a good fit. They were offering a buffet with a combined price of 568 EC dollars for a couple, including a bottle of wine. Once you are seated, you are brought you wine, and no more than 2 minutes later, asked if you want additional cocktails from the bar. You are asked almost every 5 minutes if you want to purchase additional drinks. Similarly, when you wine glass is 1/3 full, a waiter will come by and fill you glass almost full. Both of these were not appreciated. The food is sub-par, and honestly worthy of about $15 per person at any other time and location. You had your selection of salads, mac and cheese, a carving station, pasta station and stir fry station. The desserts were also lacking, and were mostly left untouched by the guests. At the end, we were charged an additional 50 EC as a tip and 50 EC for VAT. The total was around 700 EC, which is about $270 for a dinner that was only worth about $25. Do yourself and favor and stay away from the restaurant and most importantly the buffet at the Royal if the price exceeds $15 per person. Read less
