TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
I don't mind paying as long as I get what I pay for. The value simply isn't there in this resort. It's expensive without knocking my socks off. There are two types of rooms: those ideally situated... Read more near the pool and those "ocean front". The pool view rooms are stick built duplexes with paper thin walls. The "ocean front" rooms are set well back from the beach with a large barrier of plants between the rooms and the ocean. These are cinder block, and look quieter. Some are two story, and you may be able to see the ocean from the second story of these rooms. However, you can get to your own beautiful beach by going between the plants. This place looks good for family s. There's a nice playground, tennis court and of course the pool. You can get bed and breakfast or full meal plan. These meal plans consist of a buffet for each meal. If you want to go to a sit down restaurant you get a 20% discount on these restaurants if you're on the meal plan. The buffets can get old. While the dive shop is well run, it's WAY overpriced. They charge $42.00 for a tank of air on an unguided dive on the mediocre house reef. Finally, if you're interested in social engineering with your travel dollars here's the scoop on the ownership of this place. It's owned by one Mohammed Dean. At the present Mr. Dean is vice president of the country. However, new elections are planned (somehow the Maldives is having trouble conducting a legitimate election!). Really loved the experience, wonderful beaches, super snorkelling, good food and well organised. Alcohol was a touch expensive, but that probably didn't do us any harm as we drank less, and the... Read more prices being in dollars seemed to make it seem higher. I've seen the odd comment about poor service but I have to say we couldn't fault it, and felt well looked after in all areas. The facilities were good (having said that we didn't use the pool as the sea was so fantastic) and the standard rooms were more than adequate for our needs. Read less
I have stayed at Bandos many times since first visiting in 1989. Yes, there will be more luxurious islands but I would always recommend Bandos to people who say they want to experience the Maldives... Read more as it should be and how it used to be before all the high end chains leased islands. It still has a genuine feel about it and is excellent quality for a 4 star hotel. It is not too far from the airport for those that don’t want a long transfer or sea plane transfer. The spa is absolutely first class. I have visited over 30 of the islands over the years and the house reef on Bandos is definitely the best - the most amazing snorkelling a few metres from shore. In comparison to many other islands, it is large and therefore for those who are concerned that the Maldives would be too quiet for them, with an island this size, there are always people to talk to, day activities, a gym, tennis courts and nightly entertainment but don't let that put you off if you want a 'get away from it all holiday' – Bandos can still offer this too. You can always find a part of the beach all to yourself. I have visitied alone and with friends and always had the most amazing time. And I have to say, Guru who has been on the island for many years is one of the best cocktail makers I have ever come across! Read less
No need to feel under-dressed at this tropical island. Varied selection of visitors from China, Russia, India, USA & Germany. Popular with families & groups rather than just honeymooners. Allow... I think many of the reviews can subjective, unless the reviewer has been to multiple 4-star Maldives islands for a fair comparisons. Comparing against 5-stars, or someone who has never been to... Read more Maldives, or a beach in California wouldn't really make sense. So here's my take: I've been to Hawaii, Greek islands, and Cancun (5-star all-inclusive). So I draw comparisons mostly against Cancun. SNORKELING: Best one I have ever been to. Better than Hawaii or Cancun. Just off the sunset bar, there are tons of different kinds of fish, even small sharks. I went snorkeling EVERYDAY and just couldn't get enough of it. SERVICE: Poor. Once in a while you get a couple of nice staff. For example, breakfast closes at 9:45am and one staff came by twice to tell us breakfast is finished. Another staff lied to us and said we can see the dolphins at this time so we should go see it! My girlfriend left and saw nothing. He was trying to kick us out. Other than the breakfast area, most staff had no smiles on their faces Food: Food is decent. The Thai place is really good but pricey. Large prawns dinner was average also. I'd just go with burgers and sandwiches, they're good. Drinks: Long island at the Sand Bar was strong. But margarita at the Sunset Bar was poor - not sweet enough and couldn't taste the alcohol.
