We were looking for a short break in February after such a dreary winter. Direct options from Glasgow were limited to Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Sharm. Weather in the Canaries isn't spectacular in... Read more February, Sharm we've been to a few times. We had a wee look around considered Sri Lanka and noticed good prices to Mauritius staying at the Coin De Mire, in some cases cheaper than Tenerife. The beauty of scheduled flights with Emirates also means you are not restricted to 7, 10 or 14 days. We booked through Hayes and Jarvis and opted for 8 nights. OK flights are a bit longer than Canaries or Sharm but flying with Emirates you have plenty of films to catch up on. Flight schedules were excellent outbound. Wife worked to 16:00 and we left at 20:45 via DXB. Meaning she saved a day’s holiday. Arriving in Mauritius in the evening at 16:30ish means, that although you're tired, by the time you get to the hotel, check in and have a bite to eat its straight to bed and no probs with jet lag. We were booked into a deluxe room on half board. After stuffing ourselves over Xmas and New Year we were both trying to take it easy. Room was excellent, large bed 6 foot wide, fantastic rain/waterfall shower head plenty of flow and temperature adjustable to what you require, hot or cold. There is more than adequate storage for clothes. You cna use either UK or European Plugs, they have a selection of both. They provided a plug in bug killer. The AC was excellent. We had a flat screen TV and DVD. TV channels are nothing spectacular. DVDs were available from reception. We hardly turned the thing on. We had a problem with our kettle leaking, after a few replacements we eventually got one that worked. They were quick to sort out the replacements. We took our own coffee and teabags as they charge 50p or whatever for theirs. Mini bar, we used a few bottles of water but filled the thing up with our own drinks. If you are al inclusive you get most of the things out the mini bar except the bottles of wine. There is a huge supermarket in Grand Baie for stocking up, Super U There were sunbeds outside the front of the room we didn't use them. We were only half board. Breakfast was Ok, Omelettes, Continental. Now and again we got bacon and a decent sausage. Evening meal was a buffet. Different theme nights. I didn't have a problem finding something I like. Although it was nothing to write home about and didn’t starve. They had small steaks and fish one night they were very good. You could pay extra for a lobster diner. Drinking in the bar could be expensive, about £5 for a cocktail. We didn't do lunch but the lunch options looked good, sandwiches, burgers etc. If you want to take lunch, I would recommend you go all inclusive. All inclusive would work out about £20 per person per day. if on a budget skip the deluxe room, go with the superior and put the cash towards All Inclusive. There is WiFi available in the reception and Bar. It's a bit hit or miss. Enough to get your email and catch up with the news. I down loaded a few extra books for the kindle with no problems. There was usually some entertainment at night. We enjoyed chatting with people around the bar. There were various nationalities we spoke to from the UK, France, Switzerland and Germany. As others have mentioned there was no problem getting sunbeds at either the pool or the beach. We used both pool and beach As others have mentioned the beach is across the road. It's like being back at scholl as the security gaurd guides you over the road. Road isn't that busy. Beach is narrow. Ask around for best places to swim or snorkel. For snorkelling you can go straight in off the beach and head out for the buoys that are close to the reef. It’s a bit of a swim and only suits confident swimmers. If you are swimming in the sea here you need something to protect your feet. If you wander a few small beaches along to the right, the first one with the boat garage in the wall, its easier to get in and closer to the reef for snorkelling. Visibility isn't always the best. I recommend getting a trip on the hotel snorkel trips as soon as you can to see where they take you. Its possible to swim out here. Easier with fins though. Unfortunately I didn't have any but managed ok. We took a speed boat trip out to the Islands. Gabriel, Plate, and Coin de Mire. We booked with the Guy on the beach. The beauty of the speed boat trip is you depart at 8:30 arriving well before the Catamaran’s. We had a bit of snorkelling at Gabriel before the hordes arrived. The snorkelling was excellent very clear. Great for less experienced. We moved over the Plate Island. You can snorkel here as well but you need to be wary of the current. BBQ lunch before heading to Coin de mire for a final snorkel. This is in deeper water, there is a ridge heading up to the island with nice coral and larger fish. Once back in the boat we seen some dolphins heading back. If you do a boat trip make sure you have a hat and plenty of suntan lotion. Loads of local busses from outside the Hotel. This is a must, great cheap way to get about and highly enjoyable. Grand Baie is something like 50p. Port Luis less than a £1. You can get a bus to Port Luis form outside the hotel but it will take the coast road. We took this bus to Port Louis, gives you a chance to see the island, and got the express bus back. This goes to Grand Baie where you can jump a bus to the hotel. You could also take the bus to Pampelmousse Gardens You have to go to the red church at Cap Malheureaux, its a beautiful we spot. We took the bus, it's a bit of a walk in the heat. Watch though, you think the bus is going the wrong way. It takes a wee detour to the bus garage before coming back onto the coast road. Unfortunately our holiday didn't last too long and it was back to cold and wet Glasgow. We checked in online and sent the boarding cards to reception who printed them out for us. This might save you some time at the airport check-in. Overall I highly recommend this hotel. If you are on a budget or looking for a cheeky week or so it's ideal. Remember it's a three star. The staff were all excellent. Very friendly and helpful. It would be great for a young couple on honeymoon who are on a tight budget. A tropical holiday for the price of a good hotel in Tenerife. The room was cleaned and the bed sheets were changed everyday. Returning to our room each day to find a towel made into a swan or a heart or even an elephant! was really very sweet also. The pools were cleaned each morning (there are 2 pools) both are big enough for all to enjoy. The food was buffet style which changed each day. Their was something for everyone. There was entertainment provided each evening which was enjoyable (SEGA!) All in all the hotel was great. The staff was what really make this hotel most distinctive and outstanding. Such a friendly, genuine, happy bunch who made us feel so welcome and happy during our stay. Nothing was too much trouble. I do not wish to single out any particular staff as that would be unfair on others. Everyone was fantastic to us. Overall I would recommend this hotel 100% Read less
We'd a relaxing week at Coin to Mire with our boys (8 and 10 years) . The pool was big enough for everybody. The free use of table tennis and tennis court were great. The game center and also the... Read more fitness was not really top..needs a fresh up! A plus is the very friendly staff. The beach is nothing for swimming or snorkeling, but if you want a nice tan there're free sun beds. Also the glass bottom boat trip is ok for an hour. The beach is only about 2-3 m wide....and water not really clear. So don't be to disappointed ...but its still great view! There's a public bus we used almost every day to get to town which takes only 10 minutes and costs 24 rupies around 50 cents) one way. There's a market and lots of stores. Go out there..don't stay at the hotel all the time. Second visit to Coin de Mire hotel and it won't be our last! We love this hotel, nothing is too much for the staff, and they have become our friends. Ashley in reception is a breath of fresh air... Read more and full of smiles. Christina and Manjoo from the restaurant were great. They worked tirelessly and still had time to chat to customers. Edwidge from the kitchen always recommended the best salads, and Samantha's omelets and poached eggs were always done to perfection. We stayed in a deluxe room which is very spacious. The A/C was very quiet, and the room was cleaned well everyday, wih lovely towel arrangements on the bed. The beach in front of the hotel is nice, but there are a couple of beautiful beaches, either 10mins to the right or a 30mins stroll to the left of the hotel, towards Perybere beach which is a mix of tourists and locals. The entertainment is varied, unobtrusive and engaging, such as sega dancers and the soiree duo. The general décor of Coin de Mire is very fresh, lots of whites and aqua, and trees surrounding an open-plan reception area. We absolutely loved the spa at this hotel! The women are so professional and courteous, and clearly highly trained. They recommend facials and massages based on your skin type, and whether you want to be relaxed or energized. The general manager Ravi and the restaurant manager Wallid, always made a point of coming over to say hello everyday, and checking if they could do anything to make the stay more enjoyable. Overall we would highly recommend Coin de Mire hotel to anyone looking for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere Read less
