Read more I always wondered why people rave about Mauritius......well now I know. My wife and I visited the Sugar Beach Resort in March 2015. It was clear from the start that eveybody working at the hotel knows about customer service making the experience unforgettable. The location and setting is absolutely fantastic. Our room ( #801) was right at the end far from the madding crowd. I could crawl out of bed into the pool or onto the beach. The hotel has lots to offer catering for almost every need and want. We hired a car and driver for a whole day exploring the island. I highly recommend this. It gives you the opportunity to learn more about the people and how they live. A visit to Sugar Beach is definitely a bucket list item. Just do it ! Read less

We had a 7 nights stay at Sugar beach. This was our second time to Mauritius and we stayed at 5 star hotel before. There were too many things at Sugar beach which should not happen at a 5 star hotel. Rooms/balconies need some renovation/painting and proper cleaning. It looks like they do it, you could see workers painting in some rooms, but it does not look like it helps a lot. The first room we got was nice, but it was facing the bar/entertainment area and too loud with no privacy at all – all guests were passing by all the time. Luckily for us, our travel agent helped us with a room change, because the hotel said it was full- booked and could not helped us. The second room we got was situated near the kids club facing the quiet pool. This room was much better and more quiet, but we had a really big problem with ants in the room. Every time we complained (and we did it normally twice a day – because every evenings and morning they appaered at a new place i the room). The staff tried to sort it out. They spayed the room, and we have got a spray in order to do it ourselves, but it was not possible to get rid of the ants – they kept coming back every day. We could not have our clothes in the wardrobe because of this. Old paining was falling down on the balcony at that room as well. This should not happen in a 5 star hotel. But in general, if you are lucky with your room, you would have a great holiday at this hotel. We were on a halv- board basis and enjoyed the food a lot. This hotel has one of the best breakfast/dinner buffets we have tried – with really good variety of tasty food. The service was sometimes very slow, drinks could come after we were finished with meal. And the prices for drinks are really high. On the other side, you can go to the local supermarket just 20 min away and buy beverages. The hotel have a wonderful beach. As it was written, there are coral pieces on the beach, but it’s not the hotels fault. On the other side there are better hotels with better beaches at Mauritius. We liked the sport activity center as well and used it every day. It was great fun. And I want especially mention yoga classes with a great teacher. I could do it every day if it were possible. We really appreciated the quiet pool area. We would not go back to this hotel because we know that it is possible to get much better value and quality for the money at other 5 star properties at Mauritius. Read less

Read more We stayed at the Sugar Beach resort in March this year, it was our honeymoon. Arrived at the hotel after the long flight from the UK....check in took a while. A lady brought us some iced tea which was full of dead flies....nice. We were then shown to our room which was lovely although a little dated, partial ocean view but the grounds are beautiful and well maintained so this was ok. The hotel is literally on the beach.....and it is an amazing beach, with a gorgeous view of the mountains. Yes it is a a little rocky.....so take beach shoes and you will be fine ;) breakfast is served in the buffet restaurant each morning, it's huge and there's a massive selection so surely something for everyone. We had our evening meals there twice and again, nice with plenty of selection. We upgraded to all inclusive before we went and I would recommend this as otherwise it is a VERY expensive hotel to eat and drink at. If I was to return to Mauritius.... I would find a lovely B&B and eat out locally..... A far better option on this amazing island. But as it was our honeymoon we thought we'd go for a lazy option ;) so there's Tides restaurant which is AMAZING. Food and service at dinner is wonderful, and the location.....literally on the sand! We were invited to a honeymoon dinner one night and it was the best meal out I've ever had! Good choice of cocktails too, and also lunch during the day is pretty good with a snack and bar menu. Then you have Citronellas cafe, the Italian restaurant just down the beach. This was our favourite as we love Italian food, we had lunch and dinner here. I would AVOID Paul and Virginie restaurant....it's in the sister hotel next door and the food is bad, the waiters are not so nice....that's it really. Also the buffet in the sister hotel next door AVOID IT!! Service is non existent. So stick with Sugar Beach side of things. Water activities (non motorised) were great, snorkelling is so good here, paddle boarding, kayaking, peddle boats etc, all free of charge. The bad point of this hotel is the service. It's so slow....by the end of the week it really started annoying us and we just felt fed up of the place. We NEVER got a coffee with a breakfast, not in 9 days of being there and after asking more than once!! And if you want a drink during the day....forget it. Ask for one and you'll be waiting 30minutes....it's ridiculously bad. There was a man making pancakes one day and even though I was stood right in front of him, with no one else there....he didn't even look up and acknowledge me. When I asked for one.... He told me to go and put an order in at the bar?!?! AWFUL. we paid a lot of money to stay there and little things like that really annoyed us by the end. Dinner in the evenings also took hours....although the food was really nice. They never come and ask if you want drinks or anything. Also, The sports bar is a bit rubbish and doesn't even have toilets!! Evening entertainment... They had a couple of singers in the Tides bar but other than that, there's nothing to do in the evenings and it gets a bit boring. The best thing we did was to hire a car and explore the island.... Go see all the amazing beaches, waterfalls, giant tortoises and temples! The worst thing we did was to book a day trip over to Ile aux Cerfs. What a RIP OFF!! The guy at this hotel charged us £200 to go... He was 30mins late picking us up and wanted us back at 2pm....everyone else we met was there until 4 and had paid MUCH less. When we got there, yes it's a beautiful place, but you don't even get a drink or decent food for that price, and they also charge you for using a sunbed on the beach! It's a disgusting rip off. Back to the hotel..... Very clean, room and towels replaced everyday. Beds at the pool and beach were always available, no stress. Would we go again? To Mauritius, yes, in a heartbeat. But we will not be returning to Sugar Beach as it just falls short in a few too many ways. Read less
