TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
We stayed at La Pirogue/Sugar Beach in April 2010 and can't wait to go back. Our accommodation wa sin La Pirogue but this entitled us to use the restaurants and facilities of Sugar Beach. Pros: the... Read more main buffet restaurant of Sugar Beach was far superior and the quality and choice excellent. To book a restaurant you need to phone for availability the day before which is a little tiresome. Citronella Restaurant (Italian) is situated on the beach and is in a superb setting on the beach and is our favorite. The adult pool is situated to the south of the grounds and is peaceful if you prefer some quiet. Cons: We did expect the sea to be turquoise and were disappointed that it was not as vibrant as other places we have been to in the Indian Ocean. We also found it difficult to snorkel as the coral was such a long way out. Read less
This is possibly the most friendly hotel we have ever stayed in, from the front reception desk to the guys tidying up, we were given genuine smiles everywhere we went. The food and drink were always... Read more fine with good quality and selection. The resort itself was stunning and kept immaculate in fact, a true bit of paradise. We stayed at the end of the resort near the quiet pool and found this just perfect for us. The room was spotless and the mini bar was as good as we have experienced anywhere we have been. The WiFi could be a bit on the slow side but never a huge problem to us. We did a couple of trips, the Tom Cruise and the catamaran trip, which I would recommend. This is only the second review I have posted, the first because a resort was so bad, this because for us, it was so good. I would like to thank Andrew Slome (the manager, who always had time to talk with the guests} and his staff for making this holiday so special. One thing to watch out for though are the yellow wasps. I got stung by one and the pain is something else but after a few hours it does subside. This is not the hotels fault I must point out, the little devils live all over the island. I highly recommend this resort to anyone who reads this. Read less
Stayed at this amazing resort between 8th and 18th September 2014 on honeymoon. The hotel buildings, grounds, beach and people were all really lovely. I thought September was a really nice time... Read more to visit as its not too hot during the day and very comfortable in the evening and at night - around 26 / 27 degrees c in the daytime and cooler at night but still very nice. Food was really good at all the hotel resort restaurants, however sometimes a bit of a long wait at the main beach bar / restaurant (forgot the name) at dinner... not sure if this was due to problems or maybe the people are just more relaxed than what I'm used to.... Only issue was that I didn't feel honeymooners arrangements offered by the hotel were properly explained and left us a few days in wondering if we had missed out when seeing others getting 'special' treatment... when I queried this I was told we would be offered a beach dinner etc on another night, however when I went to book the restaurant was nearly fully booked - it was denied but I think we had been overlooked before raising the issue... all in all this was an awesome honeymoon and any faults were overshadowed by the experience!!! We stayed at Sugar Beach for ten nights during October and had our wedding here. The wedding day was fantastic, I was in contact with Christine via email in the run up and when we arrived we arranged... Read more all the finer details. Christine made it all so stress free and took care of every detail. We got married in the gardens and had a private wedding meal on the beach with a BBQ. It was fantastic. This is a lovely hotel, we stayed on an all inclusive basis which I would recommend - plenty of choice with themed buffets every night and you can also eat in the a la carte restaurants both at Sugar Beach and sister hotel La Pirogue. Plenty of choice of food and drinks, the cocktails were fab. One problem we did encounter was that it was difficult to get tables in the a la carte restaurants as we were quite a large group (11 adults, 3 children). This did stress us out a bit unfortunately as we felt it gave a bad impression to our friends and family. We also booked a dinner in the Paul et Virigine restaurant at La Pirogue which they denied all knowledge of when we arrived. Guest relations at sugar beach resolved this for us and we got the table in the end, but the service in this restaurant was terrible. Elsewhere in other restaurants, service is good if a little slow at times. Our room was lovely, right by the beach with lovely sea views. Big thank you to the housekeeping team (Diana I think her name was) who really went to town with our wedding turn down service. We also had breakfast on the balcony the day after our wedding as part of the package, which was lovely. Great to see a regular presence from the hotel manager and assistant manager, making sure the guests are happy and resolving any issues. All in all, I would recommend this hotel for a wedding in Mauritius. Big thank you to Christine and the team for making it such a special day! Read less
