TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
This was our first trip to Mauritius and we spent the extra money for what we had been seduced into believing was a true 5* resort hotel. We opted for the all inclusive package and asked for a quiet... Read more room not near the night time entertainments area. We had room number 787 which was about as far away from the main facilities as one can get. It was quiet until the weekends when rest of Mauritius inhabitants decide to spend the weekend camping on the publicly owned waste ground adjacent to the hotel accommodations. Throughout the weekend from Friday afternoon until early Monday morning we were subjected to a cacophony of very loud music and merry making, including some very smelly bar-b-ques. Anyway most of the time it was 'as promised' quiet. The room itself was a little dated in décor, I'm told this is described as colonial, the bathroom had seen better days with heavy scratching in the base of the bath. It was clean and well equipped when the house keeping staff remembered to actually attend and clean the room. Twice during our stay it was completely forgotten, requiring a complaint to the duty manager. Several times I had cause to request items of laundry [towels and face flannels] which had also been forgotten. Food in the main restaurant area was of good standard and a varied and interesting balance of different foods from around the regions. Tides Restaurant and the Citronellas restaurant served high quality food [haute cuisine] and the service was usually very good and attentive although the choice of wines is limited, many of which on the menu were simply unavailable. It is necessary to book for a table at either of these places but the table is yours for a long as you want it, there is no rush to get your table free for another diner. One minor irritation that we experienced was tipping. We had been led to believe that tips were included in the price of the holiday package, however it quickly became noted from certain members of the hotel staff that if you were not a regular tipper you found it difficult to get good service at certain times. Other members of staff appeared to be truly happy in their employ and were more than happy to fully carry out their duties without the inevitable holding out of the hand. I did raise the issue regarding the housekeeping issues and the tipping and some improvement was noted however in a hotel of this size and occupation standards slipped back all too quickly. Evening entertainments was basic and ad-hoc and not of a very good standard but we didn't go on that sort of holiday anyway so if was sufficient for our needs. Air con and Wi-Fi worked well, and is a must for this resort. The beaches are clean and well looked after from local security. On site water sports equipment are of a good standard and availability. The resort and placement of the hotel is absolutely wonderful, and I must admit that in the main it works and does most of what it says it can provide. Sadly for us, the minor irritating and repeated issues spoiled what should have been a really superb holiday, given the overall cost holiday. Would I go back to Mauritius yes - would I go back to this hotel and pay as much No. Read less
Great hotel! Must say the staff was so friendly and really taking care of us. Food absolutely amazing. We also lovet that one have a good access to Flic-en-flac - a nice beach walk away. I can thoroughly recommend this 5 star resort on the beach at Flic-en-Flac. The grounds and facilities are extensive and include the adjacent sister hotel La Pirogue. ALL the staff were very helpful... Read more and friendly and their ability to speak several languages each was impressive. Nothing was too much trouble. Go for the 'All-Inclusive' option. We were asked on arrival if our holiday included any significant events and a birthday cake was provided for my wife at our dinner restaurant of choice. There were three weddings on the beach during our 7 day stay - all tastefully done. There is a kids club and teen club but these are not intrusive if like us you are a mature couple looking for a quiet holiday. Good accommodation with sea views. Thoroughly recommended. Read less
We went to Sugar Beach in Early December. We are a family of 5 (3 children ages 7,7 and 3) and we travelled with 3 other families. It was our first trip but the others had all been before... Read more . Generally a good hotel with a great pool/beach and fun activities planned for the kids however our kids did not join any. Our interconneting standard room was good, however I would pick the superior room that had a seperate shower. The shower in the standard room is in the bath. Our room faced the pool which was convenient but the other family had beach access which I would have preferred. Also our first night there were was a local party and at 1am we eventually had to ask the people to stop screaming down the passages. They were obliging but not something you like to do on holiday. The rest of the trip the noise was bearable only a background noise form the tides bar. Again this is not the case with the beach access rooms. We were on an all inclusive package which I would recommend because the prices on the menu were extremely high especially for South Africans. There was good entertainment at the tides and the bar. We ate at the buffet most nights as the restuarants were fully booked. The italian was nice not fantastic. The buffet had a different theme every night and although not always our taste there was always something you could find to eat. To be honest we were expecting more in the food department. Kids enjoyed the ice creams which were free on our all inclusive package. Cocktails were good however the pool service was very slow, there were just too many people for the number of staff on duty. We chartered a catamaran for our group and this was really a highlight for me, would recommend you do it. My husband and son also did the speed boats at black river which they really enjoyed however confirm the mimimum age as my brother booked through the hotel but was not allowed to take his son on the boat so was a wasted trip. Staff were friendly and although clearly run off their feet, managed to be friendly and polite. Read less
This is our fourth time at Sugar Beach. We just love coming back to Sugar Beach. The age old saying a new broom sweeps clean certainly is seen in our stay in December. There seemed to be something... Read more different with Sugar Beach this time round. Then it dawned on me, the place seemed content, the staff happy, the hotel beautifully kept. All around everything just looked better. We were so lovingly welcomed back by the staff, and given the room we so love to stay in close to the beach where we spend most nights cocktails in hand watching the sun go down. Sugar Beach is beautiful, with a long white beach, two swimming pools and enough restaurants never to get tired of eating in the same place. Thank you to Christine and Chrystal who looked after us so well. To the new manager, I have never heard staff from the waiters, entertainment, cleaners and gardeners speak so highly of a manager before. We loved our two weeks, which flew by so fast, but we will be back. Read less
