TripAdvisor Traveller Rating:
Me and my family (husband and two children aged 5 and 8) travelled for some days in Sri Lanka. The hotel has a great pool and direct access to the beach. The sport facilities are very good with a... Read more separate pool just for the activities, gym, squash, etc. Very nice area. The food is very good, plenty and varies throughout the days. There is also some entertainment after dinner. One of the best thing that this hotel has are the staff. I´ve travelled to a lot of countries in my 20 years of world travel and never found people who are so willing to make you feel good. They are out of the ordinary. Always with a smile and asking if you are ok and if you need something. I´m from Portugal where people are really friendly and nice but I was surprised on how friendly they are and humanitarian. I have to point out some excellent staff: Abi, Dayana and Mr Withanage. My daughter had an accident at the pool and these staff mentioned above were our guardian angels. The manager of the hotel provide us transportation to the hospital right away and Abi was with us all the time during our long day at the hospital. Abi is like the hotel public relations. She is always around at the hotel and if you need something she will be the right person to help you. Abi helped us in EVERYTHING! She is not only a good professional, always attentive to our needs, but also she is a very good person too. While we were waiting in the room for our daughter, we spoke about the spicy food that the Sri Lankans usually eat and that was quite difficult for our children. After a few hours she came with 4 bags with food, but not only just food, the bags had exactly the type of food we have been talking about that my children would have. Mr Withanage, the driver, also came to our room with chocolate biscuits and water to my other daughter. He also stayed with us for quite a long time at the hospital and drove us back to the hotel after. Dayana is a very warm lady at the reception. She helped us in various situations but specially when the accident happened she was there to help us, to support us, to be there for you. I want to thank the Manager, Abi, Dayana, Mr Withanage and all the staff at this hotel for all the help given to us. We are all very thankful to these persons that helped us in this difficult situation. Read less
We have just got back from a 9 day stay at The Mermaid, everythin we had read about the place beforehand on this site is true, Sri Lanka is a wonderful place with plenty to see. The staff at The... Read more Mermaid are fabulous very happy smiley & helpful people, Cheeky Chappy (Suji) had us in stiches with his cockney rhyming slang knowledge & Chamal was a very happy helpful youngman. We also used Suresh from the beach to book a couple of trips as he had been recommended on this website & we would definitely recommend him, you can contact him on email@example.com & is the one with the red mohican on the beach. My only criticism would be the evening entertainment, all the musicians sang songs from the 1950's & 60's and all seem to sing from the same playlist, it would be nice to hear something a bit more modern & upto date. But an absolutely fab stay at a fab place, fab setting & great people. 10/10 from us four Read less
Spent 8 days end of October. Welcome cold drink on arrival after the 3 hours drive from the airport. The new expressway from airport to Colombo was opening 1 day after we arrived. On the way back it... Read more took just 1hr 45mins. Our room looked a bit "tried" and could do with brightening up. Air con worked ok and was quiet. Always hot water available. There was plug-in mosquito repellent which was renewed everyday so not much problem on that front. Mini bar was virtually empty. Room was clean and towels were replaced every day. The staff are very friendly and helpful, they remember your name when you take your seat in the restaurant. The food was very good with a good selection of Western and Sri Lankan food. We had the seafood a la carte one night which was a bargain. For about £15 we had lobster, king prawns, crab, squid, tuna it was superb. Bottle of wine about £15. Never had to queue much in the bar as very quick service, the local beers & spirits were fine. No problem getting a sun lounger, towels/cushions were brought out promptly. Gardens were kept neat and tidy. Outside bar in garden adequate. Beach was empty and sea quite rough but warm. Red flags every day. My wife had a couple of spa treatments which were good and were very reasonable. Did a day trip to Galla, went the coast road & back via the expressway. Day trip to Columbo on the train, now that was an eyeopener, on the journey there which took 1.5hrs we had a seat. On the way back we had to stand squashed like sardines for an hour, what an experience for 80p for 2 each way !!!! Tut tuk's waiting outside the hotel so no problems with transport. Read less
My husband and I spent 2 weeks at this wonderful hotel in November 2013. The food was varied and very tasty plus neither of us had a tummy upset in the entire holiday!! We upgraded to a deluxe... Read more room (312) but having seen the standard rooms, the money was probably not well spent as the standard rooms have everything we required. The bed was very comfortable and the crashing of the waves had a very soothing effect. Trains were sometimes heard but not enough to disturb our sleep. The only negative was that the rain effect shower was not at all powerful. We reported this a couple of times and it was looked quickly but only with minor improvements. The room was kept very clean and the air con kept it nice and cool. The service in the hotel is second to none with everyone bending over backwards to help. At the end of the holiday we were asked by various members of staff to complete their comments books and I felt that this was an excellent way of ensuring that management were aware of the comments that guests were making about their staff, but also acted as a motivational tool for the staff themselves. For me the 2 outstanding members of staff were the Sports team - Sujith and his colleague who organised the sports. They were unassuming but great fun. We know now how to play boules - thank you guys. There are always plenty of sun loungers available either under the trees near the beach, on the lawns or by the pool. The hotel has a nice homely and friendly feel as there are only 80 rooms. Wifi is available but only in reception and it is very slow. For the 1st 2 days there was no wifi due to a fault in the local area. As an improvement, I would recommend that wifi is available throughout the hotel. The only other issue we experienced was the menus for both wine and a la carte food. Both have a sentence at the bottom which states "Prices are subject to 10% service charge and government tax" - What is not stated is that is 10% service charge plus another 15% (approximately) government tax. On the Spa menu the prices are inclusive of both charges. We also experienced other hotels in Sri Lanka also using the "Inclusive" prices. Whilst at The Mermaid we booked 2 x 2 day trips (staying overnight in a hotel) with Suresh, one of the beach boys (with a red mohican haircut) - firstname.lastname@example.org. I would highly recommend Suresh and his team. His driver is highly competent driving on what I would challenging road conditions. We went to Yala National Park, Uttuwala, Galle and the Turtle Sanctuary. On the second we went to the Elephant Orphanage, Kandy and the train ride through the mountains. Both trips were memorable, however I would point out that getting around in Sri Lanka is slow due to the roads and number of vehicles on them.Be prepared to take the opportunity to have a doze on the mini bus. I even had the bar staff make up my own cocktail which everyone was drinking by the time we left. We booked our trips through Suresh on the beach, he tailor made our trips for us & the cost was at least half of what the reps were charging. He's a lovely guy & will go out of his way to help you.
