After a quiet week at Playacar Palace this was a bit of culture shock but the place grew on us. At night the lobby bar and pool table area was really the only place to congregate. It would be nice... Read more not to have children in this area- a space for them would be nicer so the adults could lounge and have a drink. We loved the rooms but our concierge room had a ridiculously small balcony- barely room for two chairs, no lounges and no privacy! Who designed this.? I love to lay out on the balcony and listen to ocean- not possible in this section of rooms although a beautiful view, could not enjoy it. Must mention some outstanding employees: Santos, Hector and Bebe(Michelle) at breakfast and lunch; Isabel and Mary- the most friendly and hard working grill cooks at breakfast!; Margarita was the best drink waitress at the pool. Hated that they changed her area midway thru our week. A previous reviewer mentioned poor drink service at the pool- we absolutely did not experience. Then there was. Roger and Alberto our superb waiters who made us feel so special with flaming specialties our second night at Iponema. We loved the food at the Brazilian steakhouse, the Mexican and Italian! I would be remiss if I didn't point out to mgmt that the two hostesses at Iponema are the worst choices I have seen at any palace/hard rock property. Two nights in a row they were rude and unaccommodating. Elise and Ale didn't even look up to recognize our presence upon our arrival. Elise was on her cell phone, tucked under some papers and ale was busy untangling a hairnet. My husband said, they aren't even looking up- they seated us but with attitude and no apology. I don't think you want them representing your brand Victor from activities was such a nice young man. My husband and I enjoyed playing blackjack with him. Remember we said you would be the best dealer when we return. My husband called him Carlos Santana - and he can sure dance! The most impressive thing that happened was we found the bed terribly uncomfortable-I called it a hard rock! Housekeeping tried to add a pillow top to the mattress- that did not help. My husband spoke to the concierge on our floor-1160 ( sorry I forget the gentle mans name- dark hair, glasses and his name started with the letter A) he said we were on vacation and needed to be able to sleep. That next day the concierge and housekeeping got together and changed our mattress!,, it was perfect sleep after that. I cannot believe they did this for us and am so thankful. I have to say, I have been a palace premier member for about 8 yrs- a hard rock legendary VIP member for one year and this is the first property that made us feel like they really appreciated us as members. I ended my week so happy with staff and this beautiful beach, that I decided to return with my adult daughter on the 17th for another 5 days. Read less
We had stayed at this hotel before six years ago, when it was the Cancun Palace. It was wonderful then, so we decided to go back this year. The rooms and facilities were still 5-star. The staff... Read more and service, which had been excellent six years ago, was even better, even friendlier this time. And the big, most pleasant surprise - the food, which was very good before, was even more outstanding this time - absolutely delightful. Ipanema (the Brazilian steakhouse), Zen (oriental, with Japanese hibachi), and Ciao (the Italian restaurant) were all absolutely superb - as good as the best restaurants in-type that you would go to in a big city. Fitness facility and spa were great. Beach and pool facilities, including bars, snack services and wait staff efficiency, were as good as I have ever experienced at any resort. We'd be more than happy to go back, and probably will. Read less

Read more This place is beyond confusing! Between the screaming kids and the lewd drunks I can't figure out of its a family resort or a spring break destination! Before you book consider this...if you are a young family would you want your kids around a bunch of drunks? If you are a couple do you want a bunch of screaming kids swimming in the pool while you are trying to tan and enjoy your vacation? It's just weird and neither a family friendly resort or a relaxing getaway! Who ever rated this place a 5 star should lose their job! This is far from a 5 star! The beds are hard as a rock...(no pun intended) if your looking for a restful night sleep you can't do it at this resort! The beds are awful, the walls are so thin you can hear the people in the next room, the doors to the rooms shut and all you hear is slamming of doors, the carts going up and down the hallway is all you hear day in and day out! The screaming staff yelling at each other in the hall way in Spanish is just the best way to be waken up In the morning!!! I won't even get into the amount of work that needs to be done to this resort to bring it up to a 5 star...when you walk into the resort it's pretty but that's about it, other areas need maintenance! There is nothing to do at this resort. The pool is dirty and unsanitary! You can see the gloomy water...plain gross! The beach is ok, you can't swim in the water as the tides are high. The beach area is nice with the exception of vendors trying to sell you fake cigars and ugly necklaces! There are no day activities or night activities. The main bar area is packed with kids playing pool and their parents getting drunk at the bar...weird! Just plain weird! The food is ok. Not terrible, but unless you like eating the same thing day in and day out...good luck with lunch and breakfast! Dinner isn't bad...ate at the Brazilian and Italian restaurant that was good. The room service is a nice touch. The front staff all need to be fired! They are rude, unorganized and dishonest! When we checked in we were told that we had booked two double beds ocean view but if we like we can have 1 king...since we are a couple we said sure we will take it...we enter to see the room...it was in the basement facing a wall! The room was about 200 sq feet, I was not happy, went back upstairs and asked just to get the double beds that we booked since to me that was a downgrade and not an upgrade! They rudely told me that since it's there high season, they had nothing else available! After 15 mins of yelling that I wanted what I had paid for a manager came and told me that he will have a room ready for us in 2 hours...again I was told it's there high season! Well guess what I DONT CARE! I paid $5000 for this trip so I better get what I paid for! After 4 hours we got a mediocre room facing the ocean, but right below us an empty pool on the forth floor with a canopy covering the bar that is full of rust! Right now as I sit here in my hotel room all I am trying to do is go back to toronto and face 20 inches of snow...it's much better then the sleepless nights I have had! I am sitting in my room writing this while my travel agent sees of she can book is a flight back home...if you are a bit hesitant booking this hotel, please listen to me when I say a 4 star in Cuba is better then this so called 5 star! Save yourself the time, money and aggravation! If you are a couple book the secrets the vine...my husband and I walked in there to see if we can change hotels and unfortunately they were sold out...I wish I had booked there instead of this hell!
