This was our third stay in the Grand section of Moon Palace and our seventh overall. We return to Moon often as this is our favorite resort in the Palace chain. Other recent reviews have covered many... Read more specific features of this great resort, so I'll highlight what specifically appealed to us as long-time Palace Premier VIP and Elite members and lovers of Moon Palace. We prefer the Grand section because the rooms are larger and the environment is more sedate and "classier" than the Sunrise and Nizuc sections. Classical and light music is played softly from little outdoor speakers around the property. There is no forum for large shows, so the evening entertainment tends to be small jazz groups and singers. Some nights feature music and a bar upstairs on the Caribeño terrace. Caribeño is the only restaurant where you can enjoy a completely peaceful buffet breakfast outside in the cool morning air. The service at Caribeño is excellent and the personnel become like family very quickly. I'd like to especially mention Ariana, Cynthia, Jorge, Liliana, and manager Sergio Calderon. There are three pools on the Caribeño level, one of which is a huge lap pool. The Los Tacos snack bar and pool down the hill feature a jungle environment with crocodiles in the jungle. They can't get to you but are fascinating to watch especially when the snack bar personnel feed them. In the morning, get there early to get a comfortable bed for sunning around the pool. The huge beach at Grand is very lightly used in general, so if you want solitude, this is the place to go. If you want glitz, action, and "excitement," you'll find large, beautiful lobby bars and night clubs down the beach in Nizuc and Sunrise. You can walk between the sections or take one of the large buses that continuously circulate among the lobbies. During the day we tend to spend a lot of time at the VIP beach bar near the Palapa Barracuda, in Sunrise with the friendly staff, the most cordial being bartender Ivan and waitress Yadira. Our room, 85218, was large and very comfortable with a balcony overlooking the jungle. The only flaw was apparently a worn bearing in the A/C unit, which made a continuous thumping noise. It interfered with sleep the first few nights but then we got used to its "heartbeat." In the evening, we try to visit all the restaurants and attend the very lively shows in the Sunrise and Nizuc sections. The many a la carte and buffet restaurants are quite varied and all are excellent. Our favorites are the Arrecifes (Brazilian) restaurant for its excellent meats, and Los Caporales for excellent Mexican dishes. We were less happy with Momo (many dishes don't seem authentic Asian) and the two golf course restaurants (in our view, the food and service don't live up to the somewhat pretentious atmosphere, although other people rave about them). We took three tours. The best, in our view, was the evening trip to the new Xoximilco, which features barges silently poled through beautiful canals fed by underground rivers. A four-course dinner of many well-explained, delicious samples of ethnic Mexican food is served. The barges cozy up to music barges where there is great Mariachi music, singing, and dancing. On our visit, it was a calm, warm night with a full moon. Extremely romantic! We also took the excellent Valladolid tour using Resort Credit. Much more than a tour of this beautiful colonial city, it included a stop at a cavern with a cenote featuring optional swimming, a stop for a very tasty lunch, and a visit to a tequila factory. Our humorous and very well-informed guide, Antonio, explained everything in detail. The only downside was the long bus ride, about two hours each way. And finally, our "usual" excursion to Isla Mujeres, again using Resort Credit. The boat rides to and from are fun and the island is fascinating, but there's not much to do at the Dolphin Discovery location besides swimming with the dolphins. Otherwise, hang out by the pool or in the restaurants (food and beer included) or take a side tour. One great option is to take a cab, or hike the mile-and-a-quarter, to the Isla Mujeres Palace and its fine beach, where you'll be treated as a full-fledged guest. In all, it was an excellent vacation and the weather was perfect except for a brief shower one day. Read less
This review is long overdue. We got married here in May 2014. Moon palace is exceptional, they really go above and beyond in everything. We travelle with a group of about 50 friends and family for... Read more our wedding. We had been to moon palace about 6 months prior to our wedding to take advantage of their complimentary "preview paradise" program so we had a good idea of the hotel. For people who want to be in the action stay in the sunrise section, they have the sky bar (amazing martinis and great vibe) as well as the disco (the dj's will have you dancing all night for sure!) as well as the flow rider, teen lounge etc. We stayed in the nizuc section for our wedding, the hotel was so accommodating getting our large party rooms close to each other. The rooms are beautiful, we had an ocean front view that was spectacular. If you want a more quiet, boutique feel stay on the moon grand side, it is much more quiet and peaceful. As for the food, it is excellent, everyone in our party was blown away by the food. There is no need to make dinner reservations for the ala cart restaurants (except la trattoria on the golf course- which I would highly recommend, it was wonderful). The restaurants were all so accommodating, they always found space for us at dinner (which im sure was extremely difficult when 30+ people show up at once at 7pm and ask to be seated together). The hotel complex is very large but the buses run frequently and we found walking the beach path it did not take that long getting from one end to another. In terms of the wedding, we could not have asked for better. The wedding team there is amazing, they looked after each and every detail. They do lots of weddings there and although we knew other weddings were happening the same day as ours we never once got the sense of being rushed or being "just another wedding". It was very personal and down to the detail. Our wedding planner was Joselin and she is absolutely amazing at her job. The beach there is not the greatest, there is a lot of seaweed and they do clean the beach often but it does pile up. They do, however, offer free daily shuttle to sun palace and beach palace. Two of our guests went to sun palace for the day and they said the beach there was amazing. Overall i really have nothing bad to say about moon palace, if i had to do it all over and get married again i would do it there! Read less
