Virgin Holidays' View

Let the train take the strain on this fantastic journey, taking in 3 of America's most fascinating and historic cities - sit back in comfort and admire the ever-changing vistas as you're whisked effortlessly from New York to Philadelphia and, finally, Washington D.C.!

Day 1: New York

Overnight: Hotel Excelsior or similar

It's not time to board the train just yet - you've got 3 nights in New York to enjoy! On landing, transfer to your hotel independently, right in the heart of the action. After settling in, there's time to get your bearings and enjoy a delicious meal, either in your hotel or the surrounding area. Then, indulge in a little nightlife perhaps; there are some great music bars and clubs to tempt you. Alternatively, get a good night's sleep; after all, there's some major sightseeing to tackle the next day! Spend the next 3 nights at Hotel Excelsior or similar.

Day 2: New York

New York is literally stuffed with attractions, including museums, landmark buildings and, of course, the shops! We can arrange a City Pass for you, giving you access to many of New York's most famous sights, including the Guggenheim Museum, American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Modern Art, the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum and the Empire State Building. Also included is a 2-hour Circle Line Harbor Cruise - a great way to admire that famous skyline! A visit to the Statue of Liberty is another must, taking time to stop off at Ellis Island. Once you've worn your shoe leather into the ground, head back to the hotel for a quick freshen-up, then out again into the night to enjoy more of New York's fabulous energy after dark.

Day 3: New York

No trip to New York would be complete without some serious shopping! Once you've done your cultural bit, head to Fifth Avenue! Renowned throughout the world for its exclusive designer shopping, it's home to stores such as Gucci, Cartier, Fendi and, of course, Tiffany's! Greenwich Village has more one-of-a-kind boutiques and great shoe stores! Other famous stores include Macy's and Bloomingdale's - both vast department stores selling almost everything you can think of. You can also join us on an excursion to Woodbury Common premium outlets, located just outside of New York and offering amazing discounts on countless designer brands!

Day 4: New York - Philadelphia

After so much fun and excitement, settle down on the train for the short journey to Philadelphia. If it's your first time here, you may be surprised at how familiar it feels; that's because so many films have been shot here, including Trading Places, Witness and Rocky! After checking in at your hotel, it's time to explore. Independence National Historic Park (known as INHP) is a good place to start - you could spend an entire day here marvelling at its buildings, including the hall itself, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. After so much culture, it's time to sample the local cuisine. Philadelphia is home to some of the USA's best gourmet restaurants, although the street food is pretty fantastic too! Spend 2 nights at the Radisson Blu Warwick or similar.

Day 5: Philadelphia

After a leisurely breakfast, head to Old City to walk down America's oldest residential street, Elfreth Alley. In Center City is City Hall - take a trip up to the observation deck and you'll be rewarded with great views. Chinatown will provide you with a good lunch in a lively atmosphere, and at Reading Terminal Market watch the Amish farmers sell their produce. Society Hill has cobbled streets, gas lamps and some very fine houses indeed. At night, South Street is the place to be, with bars, restaurants, cafés and clubs galore!

Day 6: Philadelphia - Washington DC

It's time to say goodbye to the 'friendliest city in America' and hello to Washington DC, the driving seat of the US! After leaving your bags at your luxury hotel, head to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - that's the White House to you and me! Other historic sights include the US Capitol, Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, where you can enjoy fantastic views across the city. The Smithsonian Institution is also unmissable, boasting 17 museums, all of which are FREE! Spend 2 nights at the Marriott Wardman Park or similar.

Day 7-8: Washington DC

If more sightseeing appeals, take the Washington Duck Tour - a unique vehicle that travels on land and water; it's worth a ride even if there weren't any sights to see! For retail enthusiasts, the shopping in Washington DC is incredible. Head to Georgetown for one-off stores and the stylish 'Shops at Georgetown Park' mall with over 70 shops, including Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret. After dark, head to trendy Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan for a great night out. On day 8 head to the airport for your overnight flight back to London.
