Virgin Holidays' View

Beginning and ending in Portland – America’s ‘Best Big City’ – there’s plenty to see in-between including natural wonders and charming Oregon towns on this fabulous 8-day tour.

Portland
2 nights accommodation at Best Western Inn at The Meadows - Portland
Arrive in Portland and transfer to your comfortable downtown hotel. Hailed recently as America’s ‘Best Big City’, it’s renowned for its lively atmosphere and wealth of attractions. It’s also famous for its parks including Forest Park, a 5,000 acre haven that’s the largest urban wilderness zone in the US. Horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and fishing are all readily available – so, if you love the great outdoors, get stuck in! Alternatively, there’s the Portland Art Museum, the International Rose Test Gardens and shopping in the hip and happening Pearl District to tempt you!

Portland - Warrenton
1 nights accommodation at Shilo Inn, Warrenton

Meet your ATI rep  and receive your travel kit with directions. Head to Astoria, on the north side of the Oregon coast. The Columbia River Maritime Museum has tours on an old rescue ship ‘the Columbia’ just outside its front doors.

Warrenton - Newport

1 nights accommodation at Shilo Inn, Newport

Journey south on Highway 101 today, stopping en-route at Ecola Beach and Cannon Beach, both home to some great small shops and bookstores. Afterwards, detour through Pacific City, stopping at the Pelican Pub and Brewery for lunch perhaps, followed by a short stroll along the beautiful beach. Depoe Bay is also well worth stopping at en-route, a great whale-watching spot, dig your binoculars out and you may get lucky! Arrive in Newport during the afternoon, spotting if you can Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the tallest on the Oregon coast. An evening in artistic Nye Beach will delight with its cosy seaside restaurants serving some delicious fish dishes.

Newport - Coos Bay
1 nights accommodation at Red Lion Coos Bay

Continue south towards Eugene, admiring the beautiful coastline as you drive. Before you reach the town of Florence, stop at the Sea Lion Caves and Hecata Head Lighthouse – perhaps the most photographed lighthouse in the United States! From Florence, head west to Eugene, home to the University of the Oregon Ducks. It’s also where the very first Nike shoe was created by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman using a waffle iron! For culture buffs, the University of Oregon Museum of Art has some of the best Asian art in the northwest or head to the Oregon Air & Space Museum. For shopping, Fifth Street Public Market is recommended.

Coos Bay – Eugene/Springfield
1 nights accommodation at Shilo Inn, Eugene

Depart Eugene south on I-5 to Goshen and from there head west to Crater Lake Lodge, one of the country’s crown jewels and a lovely place to stop for lunch. From Crater Lake drive to Bend, a charming destination that blends perfectly small town hospitality with contemporary sophistication. There are plenty of outdoor pursuits for the enthusiast including kayaking on Deschutes River and mountain biking and hiking through the Three Sisters Wilderness. You could also visit the High Desert Museum or take a guided tour through Central Oregon’s unique desert lava caves.

Eugene/Springfield to Portland via Mount Hood and Historic Columbia Highway
1 nights accommodation at Best Western Inn at The Meadows

It might be time to head back to Portland but your sightseeing is far from over! Heading north on Highway 97, bypass Smith Rocks before reaching Madras. At Madras, take Highway 26 through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, stopping at the Museum at Warm Springs to admire its impressive collection of North American Indian artefacts. If you’re making good time, a 20-minute detour to Kah-Nee-Ta Resort is highly recommended for a dip in the warm spring’s swimming pool. Afterwards, head north to Hood River to take a Fruit Loop Tour through the orchards. Continue west on the Historic Columbia Highway via Horsetail Falls, stopping at Multnomah Falls for photos. Back on the highway, you’ll also enjoy some breathtaking views of the Columbia River – more reason to stop and snap away! Return to Interstate 84 West and continue back to Portland, enjoying a relaxing night in one of the city’s restaurants before heading home the next day.
