It’s surprising how little people know about the USA. Tell them you’re off there on holiday and they assume you’re headed for a big city like New York or looking for thrills and spills in Florida or Vegas. But the third largest country in the world offers sights, tastes and sounds far removed from theme parks and shopping malls. If you fancy getting to know the lesser-visited parts of the USA, how about heading for the Deep South? It’s perfect for culture creatures, particularly if you’re a live music fan.
All that Jazz
The Deep South is the musical soul of the US. Jazz, blues, rock ‘n’ roll – all have strong roots here. New Orleans is known as the Birthplace of Jazz with enough live music clubs to try a different one every night for a month. Whatever you fancy – traditional jazz, Dixieland, Latin, fusion - you’ll find it here. Bigger venues like Arnaud’s will tantalise your tastebuds with classic Creole cuisine whilst bringing music to your ears too. And once you’ve heard the music, there’s lots more to explore. Take a trip to the historic old plantation home at Destrehan or roll up your sleeves and take a Cajun cookery class.
Play that Country music
If you fancy sticking on a cowboy hat and joining a line dance, stomp on to Nashville the heartland of country and western music. Absolute must-sees here include legendary country music halls the Grand Ole Opry and the Texas Troubadour theatre. Both host live country music radio shows and you can be part of the audience. For insight into the city’s rich history, the Country Music Hall of Fame is particularly good.
Long distance information
And then there’s Memphis, Tennessee - synonymous with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Elvis lived here much of his life and his home, Graceland, is a fascinating shrine to his music and his decadent ways. The jungle room with shag-pile ceiling and indoor waterfall is star of the show. Be sure to see his collection of classic cars and private jets too. Late August is the time to stick on your blue suede shoes and visit. Every year, Elvis Week commemorates the anniversary of his sadly early demise on August 16th with all sorts of events and concerts. Try to find time to visit the excellent Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum to learn more about Memphis’ rich musical heritage too.
So... don’t get caught in the trap of assuming the US is just bright lights and big cities. There’s stacks to do here away from the usual holiday haunts. Ever wondered why so few Americans have passports? It’s not that they don’t travel. There’s so much to do in their own backyard they don’t need to leave the country.
If the USA's soulful Deep South sounds like a great place for your next holiday find out more about the latest VHOT DEALS to the Deep South.
