It’s totally a cliché to say, but the Maldives is a place to be discovered. Each island has its own personality, with different adventures to experience and luxuries to enjoy. The more intrepid explorer might take a dip in the ocean to discover sunken shipwrecks, while the more relaxed holidaymaker just wants to take advantage of the seclusion that these utopian islands provide.
Whatever your style, here’s a few ideas of things you can do if you fancy a break from the beach. We wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t though. They’re pretty perfect.
Spa like you mean it
We know you can’t wait to take that first step into the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. We’re sure that the sun and sand (and sea and swimming…) are huge lures when you’re looking at holiday in this corner of the world. However, the Maldives are also world-renowned for their spa sanctuaries and treatments that you can enjoy. We wouldn’t want you to miss out…
Some spas have an open door policy and let you ‘stop and flop’ to enjoy the ambience, read a book or indulge in a nibble or drink in their lounge areas. Others may need you to book an appointment for a treatment room or to use the sauna or steam rooms. Either way, you should stop by these small havens in your resort to treat yourself to revitalising massage or body scrub. They’ll be happy to go through their options with you, so you’ll be sure to get the pampering that you need. Your Virgin Holidays Concierge will be able to fill you in or make a booking for you before you go. Give them a shout if you’d like any more information.
And you thought the Maldives were pretty above the waves. Whether you’re going to just float on the surface and take a peek at the world below, or go for a closer look and dive under with a few deft kicks (deep breath), snorkelling is your chance to really get a glimpse of the ‘other side’ of island life.
Get that waterproof Go-Pro case or phone pouch ready, and give a snorkelling excursion a try while you’re out there. Many resorts will take you out for a few hours or as a part of a day trip to other islands, giving you the opportunity to swim among some stunning shipwrecks and coral reefs, and they’ll make sure to point you in the right direction for some truly epic underwater shots to make your social media feed shines. We’re sure ‘Maldives’ isn’t a filter… but it should be.
The Maldives practically screams (or whispers) island paradise. The atolls that make up this idyllic location are only a small part of the story. There’s a whole ocean out there to be explored, and it’d be a shame to just stick to the shallows.
Grab yourself a boat and venture out into the beautiful Indian Ocean. The great news is that Spinner Dolphins are widespread around the Maldives, and they keep a regular routine. They usually feed offshore at night, coming closer to the islands in the mornings and swimming out into the open sea late afternoon. A lot of resorts run their excursions in line with this schedule, meaning you’re very likely to see a school of these amazing animals splashing around in your wake. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon.
Make the most with a water bungalow
While not an experience or something to ‘do’ in itself, this is more a thought on making your holiday even more special. Staying in a water bungalow really makes a difference to your holiday.
While staying on the island gives you direct access to the beach, a water bungalow gives you direct access to the sea. Imagine yourself walking down your own steps, straight into the ocean — the perfect way to cool off after topping up your tan on the balcony. You’ll be able to snorkel to your hearts content and probably see an array of sea-life right outside (if you’ve never seen flying fish up close, you’re in for a treat).
The rooms themselves are usually bigger too, which is great if you’re travelling as a family or just fancy a little extra space. They’re also slightly removed from the island, a short walk along a pier, so if you prefer the sound of the ocean and a little more seclusion, then this is a no-brainer.
Like we’ve said, each island has its own personality, style, and things to do. The only thing that doesn’t change is that you’ll be on an island paradise. Don’t miss out. If you want to add a water bungalow to your holiday, we can help you through ‘Manage My Booking’.
