Picture this; the sun is setting over the African bush and you’re watching a herd of elephants cross the country’s great Zambezi River, while you enjoy a delicious spread of high tea. It sounds like a dream right? Well this dreamy vision becomes a reality when you visit The Royal Livingstone Hotel – a luxury hotel found on the border of Zambia.
Perched on the edge of Victoria Falls, this luxury hotel combines a five star service with unforgettable experiences in and around this breathtaking gorge.
With one of the Seven Wonders of the World right on your doorstep, The Royal Livingstone Hotel offers a once-in-a-lifetime African adventure. Here are some other need-to-know facts that might just lure you to this dream holiday destination!
The history of the falls
The Scottish explorer David Livingstone was the first person to discover Victoria Falls in 1855 and at the time, he named the great waterfall – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in honour of Queen Victoria. Today, it’s known both as Victoria Falls, as well as its indigenous name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. The local town of Livingstone was named after the explorer and so was the island – one of two landmasses that lies in the middle of the Zambezi River, which you can see from the hotel.
‘Front row’ views to the falls
Victoria Falls is simply amazing on all levels. At 108 metres high and 1,708 metres wide, it is one of the biggest waterfalls in the world. Guests of The Royal Livingstone Hotel can enjoy a refreshing drink on the sundeck, which overlooks the water and a fantastic array of wildlife. Every single guest room here has been built so it faces in the best direction, across the green forested banks towards the river, creating the ideal ‘room with a view’. When the river is low, those feeling brave enough can plunge into Devil’s Pool – a natural swimming pool created by a rock ‘wall’ - at the waterfall summit. You can take fantastic photos from up here and you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world!
‘The Flight of the Angels’
If you want a bird’s eye view of Victoria Falls, the hotel concierge can book you a Microlight flight over the Zambezi River and Batoka gorge. Dubbed the ‘Flight of the Angels’, you fly through the ‘smoke’ of the waterfall at a thrilling height and it’s said that you’ll feel like you’ve been ‘kissed’ by an angel. It makes for one of the most exhilarating and unforgettable experiences.
Three National Parks to explore
The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
Victoria Falls lies in the upper section of The Zambezi River and is set within The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia. At 12km wide, it’s quite small, so it’s perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing safari experience. There’s an option to explore the birdlife and wildlife from your own vehicle. Or you can take an organised game drive and spot zebra, giraffe, elephants, antelope and a variety of small animals. The Royal Livingstone Hotel is within the Park and animals have right of way through the grounds, so don’t be surprised if a zebra or two roam past you in the hotel!
The Victoria Falls National Park
To the south of the hotel, The Victoria Falls National Park fringes the captivating falls and is home to a lush rainforest teeming with fantastic plant species and towering mahogany trees. In this national park, you can explore the area on foot or take a driving safari and spot buffalo, white rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and African elephants.
The Zambezi National Park
To the west of the falls, over the border to Zimbabwe, is The Zambezi National Park – a great place to see ‘The Big Five’.
Rediscover the charm of rail travel
Imagine dining onboard a steam locomotive train where there’s just a window separating you and the picturesque Zambezi Valley.
