Serena Beach Resort & Spa

Mombasa, Kenya

The hotel

Overlooking the Indian Ocean to the north of Mombasa town, the Serena Beach Resort & Spa is a gorgeous resort, replicating the winding lanes and colourful market places of a traditional 13th century Swahili town. You can dine beneath the stars at the lavishly appointed Fountain Restaurant before enjoying some lively evening entertainment, including floor shows, live music and a disco. The active will be kept more than busy with an exciting range of non-motorised water sports or lounge by the pool, sipping a drink from the swim-up bar. At the heart of our Mombasa beach resort lies the coral-built ‘Fortress of Tranquillity' of the exquisite ‘Maisha' Mind, Body and Spirit Spa.

We also really enjoyed visiting the butterfly park on the grounds of the hotel which is highly recommended. Staff were all lovely and could not do enough for you and the spa is beautiful and hot stone massage one of the best we have had and we usually treat ourselves to a message when we are on holiday it was so nice here we ended up having two! Loved the African decor of the hotel and the beautiful gardens and pool. Nice beach but beach boys are a problem and wont let you walk down the beach without pestering you. Read less

The pool is the perfect temperature and a lovely area to relax. We didn't try the beach restaurant but the range and quality of the food in both the Fountain and the Sokoni was excellent. The only downside are the beach hawkers who prey on holidaymakers as soon as they put a toe on the public beach and are very persistent. The hotel security keep them off the property so you are not hassled but they can't stop them once you step onto the beach. However, there are plenty of places to sunbathe on the hotel premises and the bar staff are very attentive ensuring you never go hungry or thirsty!! Read less

We chose to stay at the Serena Beach Resort at the end of a three week safari and were looking forward to some nice beach R&R after an action-packed schedule. Had it been just my husband and myself, this might have happened. But, we were with my 19 year-old daughter. She was constantly hit on by both staff members and guests (young and old), and was leered at by them, to the point where I felt the need to protect and accompany her everywhere she went; through the buffet line, to the restroom, back to her room, etc. It was insane! This really put a huge damper on our time there; we left wishing we'd not come to Mombasa, or perhaps had chosen a different hotel. I also read that Mombasa is the #2 hotspot for human trafficking, so this further worried me. Other than this issue, we found the hotel to be fine. The grounds are lovely, the rooms are pretty, although a bit tired. A/C worked well, though, so we slept soundly. Breakfast and dinner was buffet-style, and I'd give it it a 3 out of 5 stars. There's only so much you can do with buffet. They tried to be inclusive of several cultures' foods. One night we went to their grill by the beach - it was good, too - better than the buffet, but not excellent, and very pricey. My husband's dish included three large prawns and cost about $26. The staff, other than the issue mentioned above, were wonderful. Very accommodating and helpful. Pool area seemed nice and the temperature of the pool was pleasant. Beach area was OK, but we avoided it due to the plethora of men who were both gawking at my daughter or trying to sell us stuff. Quite overwhelming when they swarm. We hung out next to the beach on the hotel grounds where the vendors could not come, but they still yelled at us to come and look at their items. *sigh* We won't be coming back. If we do, I'll look for other beach areas at which to stay. Read less

Back in the UK after one of the most memorable holidays of a lifetime! We spent 2 weeks in Kenya, the first few days on safari in the Masai Mara and the remainder of the time just north of Mombasa at the Serena Beach Resort. I was there with my family and in-laws, who have stayed at this hotel every year for the last 28!! Straight away that tells you that this place is pretty special! The hotel itself could do with some upgrades but this was in progress in certain rooms while we were there so I presume eventually the whole place will have a bit of a face lift. It’s more the people that really make it so special. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with the biggest smiles, a “karibu” and “welcome home”... my in-laws and all the staff there that know them call the Serena their second home! Everyone made an effort to make sure we settled in as quickly as possible and all knew our names after the first evening, probably helped by my in-laws making sure they introduced us to everyone they knew. It’s testament to the note that they have so many loyal staff that have been with for many, many years! Michael, who cleaned our room every day, was an absolute pleasure to see around the resort.. he’d always call out a hello, ask how the children were doing, even offered to take them to a football match he was playing in! He kept the rooms beautifully clean and even had some bracelets made for us to take home as a souvenir. Lennox in the Fountain Restaurant looked after us amazingly every day, as did Lillian and Lucy and so many others who cooked our eggs to perfection and some who would carry our plates to our table!! We dined in the Jahazi one night, where the food and attention to detail was faultless and Alice soon became a good friend! My partner and I went diving one day and like all the other staff the guys at the water sports centre were equally as brilliant. There was plenty to keep the kids entertained too. We spent time with Maurice, who built the butterfly park from scratch and his passion for them shines through as soon as you enter, well worth a visit. They spent the rest of their days playing football matches on the beach in the morning, water polo and beach volley ball in the afternoon. A very special mention goes to Bakari who was amazing with them. He went out of his way to include them all, especially my youngest who is just 6 years who was welcomed in to the pool every day to play water polo with everyone else more than double his size! Even when Bakari was not organising the sports events he would stop by and chat, kick a football around with the boys and one evening joined us at the pool table in the bar for a game. The kids were so sad to leave, especially to say goodbye to Bakari, that my eldest son was sobbing for 15 minutes in the car on the way back to Mombasa airport 😢 Back home we are already planning our trip back... just hope all the staff we grew to love are still there!!! Thank you to everyone for making it such special time.. you are all wonderful x Read less
