I can’t say enough about the friendly staff at Serena. All areas of the resort have an abundance of employees to make sure you’re kept happy and well serviced. The pool, restaurant (we only ate at the main one but there is also a bistro and a beautiful sand-floored upscale seafood restaurant), front desk/reception, room custodians, spa, etc. There are friendly employees everywhere that greet you and make sure your needs are met. Make sure to check out the daily events board to take full advantage of their activities and various programs. We were blown away by Serena’s food. We had a half board package so our breakfast and dinners were included. The menu options and buffet went well beyond our expectations. The breakfast buffet can satisfy even the pickiest person—they have it all—juice, cereal, cheese, bread, fruit, vegetables, mixed salads, hot prepared food, and even freshly cooked options to order. The dinner salad buffet was just as great and you also choose from a daily entree, soup, and there is a dessert buffet. Kettles for hot tea and coffee are available in the rooms. However, only two small plastic water bottles were included daily. It would be great for the plastic to be replaced with a greener option, such as pitchers of filtered water. Our bed and mosquito net was turned down nightly and we were provided with insect spray, which was needed when the rains came. The rooms also provide umbrellas, but no matter where we were on the grounds, staff offered the use of additional umbrellas to make sure we were kept dry. My only criticism is that the rooms definitely show heavy use. They’re well maintained but not new and sparkling. The closet door was almost impossible to open and shut, which only matters because it is near the door. The grounds are beautiful and tropical with lots of foliage and blooms, as well as creatures roaming around. Some might say the trees are too healthy and should be manicured. I only say this because an enormous limb broke off one day, blocking a busy trail. We were told this is normal when it rains. If this is the case, some of the larger trees should probably be trimmed. We did, however, enjoy watching monkeys jump on the gnarled limbs. The spa is fantastic and can easily compete with western spa facilities at 1/3 of the cost. I highly recommend taking advantage of their services. I had an excellent massage and appreciated the steam room afterward. I imagine all of their services are just as professional and rewarding. The entire resort is beachside. On sunny days there are hundreds of people—locals and tourists—playing in the sand and shallow water. When it rains, the beach is completely abandoned except for a few relentless touts. As other reviews have mentioned, the resort is about 30-45 minutes to Mombasa and it takes a bit longer to get to Old Town. Traffic varies due to the time of day and weather, as roads commonly flood. The hotel happily arranges tours or drivers at competitive rates. We hired a driver to give us a basic driving tour of hot spots in the city, to Fort Jesus, and back to Serena. It might be cheaper to hire a taxi to Old Town or the Fort and get dropped off. Once we were at the Fort, we paid more for a separate guide to show us around the area and to the spice market. You can opt out of hiring an additional guide but I highly recommend it. Our guide, Peter, offered a wealth of knowledge about the Fort and then gave us a quick tour through Old Town and to the spice market. You can wander the streets alone but it felt very comfortable to have someone with us to point out historical things that we might’ve otherwise not noticed. Unlike some historic towns I’ve visited, this is truly a working, breathing part of the city. Peter was very accommodating and can show you as much or as little as you’d like or have time for. I can see why people return to Serena; they treat you like family. Read less
