The only impressive thing about this place is the gym and swimming pool, period! Visited the place as a couple and boy did they make me feel unwelcome. From the breakfast chef who was moody, the pool staff and gym receptionist. I really don't understand this preference for serving white guests. From the breakfast chef who was moody, the pool staff and gym receptionist. I really don't understand this preference for serving white guests. My partner got fed up and complained to management who apologised. You've got to be white to get good service. Hopefully they've made necessary changes but I'm never going back there. Read less

Few of the hotels in Nairobi's Westland suburb have any gardens to speak of but not so the Jacaranda Hotel. Set right in the heart of this hyperactive part of Nairobi, and as a result of having been the first hotel built in the 1960's, does the hotel have not only an outdoor pool but set amid a well kept garden. This makes it quite unique in this day and age. I love coming back to the Jacaranda ever now and again, for sentimental reasons as much as for their breakfast, which offers Black Forest Ham, otherwise rarely found on breakfast buffets around the city. On check in were all my details correctly reflected and I only had to sign the registry form and a porter at the ready was I then ushered to my room. As the pictures show, was my room clean, functional and being one of the refurbished rooms the hotel now has - work is in progress - modern sockets and a bathroom with a shower instead of the regular bath tub. I had a pasta dinner at the hotel while there - Tagliatelle Carbonara - which was well prepared, plenty and was served rather promptly. Lunch one day I had at the Node, the adjoining restaurant and bar across the street from the Jacaranda main entrance and I wrote a separate review praising their Carrot and Ginger soup. Breakfast, as mentioned, was once again showing a wide selection of hot and cold dishes with an active cooking station where eggs are prepared to order. The selection of hot dishes, featuring several different ethnic choices, will no doubt let every guest find his favourite breakfast food. Gym and Spa were busy throughout my stay, used by both inhouse guests and Nairobeans from outside who signed up for membership. The Jacaranda is one of Nairobi's classic hotels and their hospitality, especially friendliness of their staff, cannot be faulted. It showed at the bar where I had tea just as I did decades ago already, where the staff passing by always took time to greet the guests seated indoors and outdoors. Definitely will revisit again in the future. Read less

The first night I arrived at 1am and there was a club opposite with blasting music til 4am. I asked to be moved. They said it was full - it wasn’t! There is also an inner door to the room as well as the ‘front’ door which cuts out all the outside noise. The hotel has a very good sized gym and an outdoor pool with sun loungers. Just across the road at the back is a small shopping centre where there are plenty of ATMs and a few places to eat. There’s also a huge Carrefour supermarket on the lower ground floor if you need to stock up on drinks/snacks. Breakfast was buffet style with an excellent choice of cooked and continental style options including an omelette station. We ate in the hotel on both nights too and again dinner was good, albeit we did wait a little while for the food to arrive. Staff are all welcoming and friendly, overall a great stay and I would happily use this hotel again. Read less

We stayed two nights here after arriving in Kenya. The hotel is right in the heart of a "good" neighborhood in Nairobi. Still, there is a wall surrounding the hotel with armed guards at the gate. The first night was miserable as a club across the street was playing music so loud we thought we were in the club. The hotel moved us to a different room for the second night, and it was very quiet. The rooms are huge, which is great. They are just very outdated and old. The whole hotel needs a renovation. Food in the restaurant was mediocre. Plenty of variety for breakfast, with eggs being very good. Dinner was ordered off a menu. We probably would not have eaten there but the hotel did not recommend leaving the property on foot. Nairobi in general is a very large but very poor city. Unemployment is something like 45%. They also have the largest slum in Africa. Infrastructure is bad - roads and airport are not what we would expect in the USA. We would not stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone. Read less
