Dock House

Cape Town, South Africa

The hotel

Fitting neatly into its neighbourhood, the Dock House gives you the full V&A Waterfront experience. It has a charming history – as the Harbour Master’s private home in the 1800s. It oozes Victorian elegance – with lavish chandeliers, exquisite fabrics, and antique-inspired furnishings (and modern luxuries like a courtyard pool with Table Mountain views). And it feels like you’re staying with close friends – with just six rooms, a bijou breakfast room, and the option to pop into other hotels in the ‘family’ for dinner. But you’re here to experience Cape Town – and you’ve picked one of the best addresses, just moments from the waterfront’s dining, shopping, and sights like Time Ball Tower and Nobel Square.

The location is amazing - you can walk to all of the cultural and tourist sites in the waterfront area. The hotel is somehow in the middle of all the action - and yet nestled in a quiet enclave, which was perfect. Our room (#5) was beautiful: large, with both historic character (high ceilings!) and modern design. But best of all were the people. We were supported with warmth, knowledge, thoughtfulness, and professionalism by Abi and Louisa, and received exceptional service from the entire staff. Thank you to everyone at Dock House for making our first stay in Cape Town such a special one. Read less

Our preference is for small boutique hotels and in the Dock House we have found one of the most incredible examples of a perfect venue in the world. We initially stayed at this beautiful waterfront hotel for 8 nights to use as our base for exploring Cape Town and the surrounding area. We then went on safari to the Kruger National Park for 5 nights before returning to the Dock House for a further 3 nights. Whilst we were upset to leave the safari, knowing we were returning to our CT home made things so much more bearable. It was wonderful that we were able to leave our main bags at the hotel whilst we were away for those 5 days. Where to start..... from the moment we arrived, the whole staff couldn’t have been more friendly, helpful and welcoming. Our room (No.4) was stunning overlooking the garden, pool and the waterfront. The view from our private balcony was amazing. My birthday was the day after we arrived and all the staff made sure my day was very special especially the beautiful “choir” singing “happy birthday” at breakfast, plus the gorgeous roses and bubbles. We simply loved the breakfast room - it is so beautifully furnished and decorated and has French windows opening out onto the garden. The cold buffet is unsurpassed and the choice is unbelievable, ranging from smoked salmon, beautiful quiches, cold meats, cheese, fruit granola to a wonderful selection of breads. In addition to this there is a lovely hot menu - the breakfast wrap is amazing! We certainly didn’t go hungry. We also had breakfast next door in the Queen Victoria which was equally good. Our room was spacious and beautifully furnished and we got a brilliant nights sleep during each of our 11 nights there. There is never an issue with noise from the V&A Waterfront across the road. The location is superb, right at the centre of everything with easy access to so many attractions and restaurants. But the biggest asset of the Dock House is the wonderful team who take care of you. Never before have we come across such friendly, dedicated and happy staff, all of whom are so eager to help and please. Tabea and the team are to be congratulated for their incredible warmth and exceptional service. Mousa and Joseph were always on hand to welcome you home, no matter how cold they were! Alvin, Christopher and Jeanette wore permanent smiles and were a pleasure to deal with. Nomore seemed to be on hand for us at breakfast and for endless cups of coffee or a cheeky beer in the garden. Lindani, Anela and Masixole always looked after us so wonderfully. Abigail and Alice were patient with us when they wanted to tend to our room (and supplied dozens of bottles of water). Louise was so lovely to us and we enjoyed all our chats - and sneaky trips to the pantry for nibbles! And thank you Tabea for all your help and your welcoming smile and for taking such good care of us. We are so sorry if we’ve missed anyone. We have travelled the world and can honestly say that for us this hotel is absolutely perfect and is definitely our new favourite boutique hotel and we cannot speak more highly of every single aspect of this truly memorable experience. We can’t wait until our next visit to our new home and family in Cape Town. D&M x Read less

Very special 6-room property right at the waterfront. The house is beautifully decorated and the staff are so helpful. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. A bottle of sparkling wine offered from the management for our anniversary was a real treat. Breakfast was excellent. Will definitely be back.
