Whale Rock Lodge

Hermanus, Garden Route

The hotel

The stage for one of the globe’s greatest wildlife scenes, Hermanus is pure paradise during whale watching season – and this authentic seaside villa puts you just moments from the magic. Sitting a block from the sea, right by the New Harbour cruise dock, and at the start of the Cliff Path, the route curves along the coast with prime viewing spots. But it’s not all about whales here, and the thatched Whale Rock Luxury Lodge also puts you close to the heart of Hermanus, with its popular shopping and dining venues, and features glorious gardens, two swimming pools, personalised service, and a boutique hotel feel, thanks to it having just 17 elegant bedrooms and suites.

Lovely guest house with particularly nice pool area (hammocks, comfortable loungers, tables, trees…). A perfect place for families and couples to unwind. The rooms were amongst the nicest on our trip, and the beds were for sure the most comfortable ones! Service was perfect – the owners booked us into great restaurants, gave useful tips on what to do and visit in the area and when we needed medical assistance for our small girl they were quick and efficient in organizing a good doctor for us in town. Over all, we could not have asked for more (only the weather was not that good!) and we would certainly return to this place when in Hermanus. Read less

Our eighth visit over the past ten years and the Lodge gets better every visit. The rooms and facilities have been upgraded to a very high standard making it a five star accommodation. The staff are always at hand to assist in making the stay like home. They book restaurants and provide a fantastic breakfast.

This was a lovely hotel to visit over Christmas. Away from the hubbub of the centre but an easy walk a great access to the Cliff path. Great service and a very relax atmosphere. Would definitely stay again.

We visited 7 hotels on our trip of the Garden Route and this was the one that stood out for us for many reasons. From the moment we arrive the staff were really friendly, inviting and personable. Our room was spacious, with a separate dressing area, a fridge, complimentary tea & biscuits (they even gave me some green tea) and the best hair dryer! We had a view of the garden and could sit outside on our little patio area with a drink from the honesty bar. The lodge is clean, breakfast was awesome, again the staff were always chatty and happy to help. Another plus is the free on-site secure parking. The hotel is a 5 minute taxi ride from town which is not a bad thing - this gives you a reason to walk along the spectacular coastal path in to town which you can reach from the hotel within a 1 minute walk. It took us about 45 minutes but we were stopping to admire the astounding views every 5 minutes. And did we mention it’s a great spot for an afternoon snooze by the pool? We’ll definitely be recommending. Read less

This hotel started as a traditional large house and it has been enlarged in the same style. There is also a new modern villa in the grounds . Our room was in the house, and it was very large and well furnished, with a large bed, comfy chairs and a fridge. Large patio windows overlooked the garden. The bathroom was very modern and functional. There are also two lounges for the use of guests, and an honesty bar in one of them. There was a very good choice for breakfast, that was taken in a room overlooking the pool and garden. Service was good. The swimming pool was large and clean, and there were plenty of sun loungers in the vicinity. Staff were friendly and helpful, and also advised on restaurants and booked them for us. The manager was 'hands-on' and made herself available to talk to guests on most days. The hotel is away from the busy town centre, but this can be reached easily on a quiet road in about 5 minutes. There is also an excellent path that goes along the coast to the town centre. Its a pleasant easy walk, taking about 1 hour, allowing for stops on the many seats that overlook the sea. Read less
