Rosenhof Country House

Oudtshoorn, Garden Route

The hotel

Named for the delicate roses that scent its beautiful gardens, Rosenhof Country House mixes pure luxury with a real feel of old South Africa. Starting its life as a Cape-Dutch homestead back in 1862, a sympathetic makeover has since turned it into one of Route 62’s most idyllic boutique hotels. And its privileged spot outside Oudtshoorn on the Garden Route puts you close to popular pit stops like Cango Caves and Meerkat Adventure – and gives you incredible mountain views. It’s kept its intimate homely feel – featuring just 14 rooms and suites, as well as elegant lounges, where you can snuggle up around fireplaces (although, unlike most homes, you can also take a dip in its outdoor swimming pool, indulge in treatments at its wellness centre, and tuck into delectable dishes in its dining room).

We had an amazing night at the hotel and can only echo the last few reviews. Very relaxed, friendly staff and a lovely dinner. It is a very high quality ‘oasis’. They even cleaned the car for us before we left. Outstanding!

Our room was very nice and the service was very good. Someone even washed your car everyday. (which it needed due to driving to a game park down dirt roads). The breakfast was very good as well. We had dinner at their restaurant the first night with top notch service but the food was only average. A bit over priced for South Africa. We did really like the ability to walk into the village every morning (about 25 minutes each way). Our room (#1) was a bit noisy as you could hear the traffic from the main road outside the gate. The hotel is full of old world charm with individual colonial style bungalows set in an enchanting garden away from the hustle and bustle of the local town. Well appointed spacious rooms also very clean. We had a lovely G&T sitting on the verandah in the sunshine when we arrived and enjoyed a drink at the "pub" in the evening before dinner. Dinner was excellent quality with plenty of choice but a very quiet atmosphere. We did not mind as we were there on an early to bed early to rise basis. The garden and pool area were very tranquil - especially loved the pomegranate tree. Breakfast was served in a lovely outside area. Staff were friendly and a lovely touch was that your car was washed and gleaming for you on departure. Did not particularly like the look of the town as we drove through as it seemed very busy unlike other towns we passed through on our travels, although to be fair there was a Music Festival event and a lot of the surrounding roads were closed as a result. All in all a perfect little stopover. Read less

However this place is a little piece of colonial paradise. The individual bungalow style rooms, the gardens and tranquility of the place combined with the main house make it a very worthwhile pit stop on your journey. Needless to say the hospitality, quality and service of all the staff was first class. As indeed was the choice and quality of their food! Read less

We only had one night stay on our journey along the Garden Route but could have quite easily have stayed longer. Rosenhof was on of our favourites. From the time the gates opened a unformed member of staff there to greet you, park your car and put your luggage in the room you knew this was a nice place. Meanwhile you are being entertained with a cold drink and nibbles whilst being informed of the place and facilities. As with all the accommodation we were in SA it was of very high quality. We had driven a lot that day and had come over the Swartberg Pass (not for the faint hearted but thoroughly recommend you do it) we decided to eat in the restaurant. I pleased to see that the set menus has been changed to al carte, as we never did get to grips with SA portions. In say that we were only charged for what we ate so you can't really complain at that. The icing on the cake is the surprise of having your car washed and gleaming for you in the morning! This is a really nice touch and something you always remember. It was a pity we didn't have time to see the town, but we did got to the Ostrich Show Farm that they recommended (with a 10% discount leaflet) and we were really glad we did. It was really informative and learned a lot about the bird that we would never have known. 1st Class. As an aside just outside the reception there is a small hut that gives information about a small local primary school trust called Zeekoegat. Please everyone, visit this little exhibition and leave a donation, there is information on what they do and what funds they need. Its obviously great work these people are doing, just think of the money you are spending on your trip to SA, so few pounds is nothing to you against what this trust needs. You will fell much better that you've at least left something that will help them. I know I did! Read less
