The hotel

This hotel is the ultimate spot to indulge one’s soul with its dramatic clifftop location along the Garden Route as well as superb cuisine, luxury spa and a sense of sleek yet natural comfort. Situated atop a cliff overlooking the ocean, with expansive uninterrupted ocean views sprawled out in front of you, this hotel has the perfect balance between architectural and design elegance along with making the most of untouched natural beauty. This small, unique hotel is made up of just 37 rooms. The living spaces are incredibly spacious with lots of light and natural lines and textures used to enhance the phenomenal setting. The hotel is located in pretty Plettenberg Bay and also within easy walking distance of Central Beach. Evidence of the region’s rich environment continues to the table; at the signature restaurant the Sand at the Plettenberg, chef Peter Tempelhoff features local produce and fresh seafood in his modern global cuisine, and for the ultimate in intimacy, the single table for 2 in the Wine Cellar offers you with an extensive list of South Africa’s best wines. The Plettenberg will suit many tastes as it embraces a more relaxed style of beach hotel, albeit with an understated elegance.

The Plettenberg was highly recommended by close friends. We celebrated my wife's birthday. The Plettenberg was highly recommended by close friends. We celebrated my wife's birthday. Unfortunately we were victims of Amoma ceasing trading, which meant that our booking had been paid for, but only realised on arrival that it had been cancelled. We were also served pork (which we had made clear that we don't eat) inadvertently. The Assistant GM, Wiida, did everything she could to make up for this and made our stay very special and comfortable. It was most memorable. It's an exquisite location, the hotel is fabulous and the restaurant superb. Highly recommend The Plettenberg, Wiida and her team. Read less

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel. We received a warm welcome from all staff. Our room was in the hotel’s blue building across the road. There was a strong security presence on the road. Our room was spotlessly clean, very bright. The bed was really comfortable too. There was plenty of space in the walk in wardrobe, complete with safe, dressing gowns and slippers. The bathroom was spacious and nice toiletries were provided. The swimming pool is small and more for lounging in than swimming. Breakfast was excellent, fine produce and great selection. We had dinner on 2 nights, the first night was superb, the second night was weak even though we ordered the exact same dishes as the first night. The staff did remove one dish from our bill and took the feedback well. At times service was slow and chaotic at breakfast and dinner. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel for its superb location and stunning setting, comfort, and friendliness of staff. Read less

The Staff are friendly and well trained right from Security to manager. Most of staff remembered me from previous visits. Refreshing welcoming drink on arrival. Rooms and restuarant with excellent view and food are top notch. Cheese souflle and prawns to die for but they won't part with the secrets. Well that way I will always go back.

We booked a sea view room for two nights. We were in the annex to the hotel, effectively on the ground although raised above street level. The view included the sea but was also facing the main hotel and parking. We did have a terrace adjoining the pool but it wasn't particularly private. To offer privacy in the room the windows were coated so you couldn't see in. However, this cut out the light making the room dark. With the terrace door open it was better but then the privacy was lost. The bedroom and bathroom were otherwise good with plenty of space. There was a complimentary mini-bar with snacks, which was re-stocked daily. Breakfast was good quality and served outside with lovely views of the sea. Staff were friendly and helpful. At times they were a bit too efficient, clearing the table when we popped to the buffet. The general manager, MJ, took time to speak to all guests and the concierge was very helpful. Security is constantly present around the hotel and grounds. Whilst this was reassuring, it was also a little disconcerting, particularly as we were warned not to take one of the paths from the hotel to the beach, due to muggings and not to go into town after dark without a taxi. Overall, a pleasant hotel well located for the town and beach. Read less

Although the weather when we were here can only be described as dismal, one could see (in the fine weather as we left!) that this hotel has a splendid location with excellent views over the bay. We were warmly welcomed and provided with excellent and personal service. The decor of the hotel and our room was very tasteful and all the fittings comfortable and of a high standard. The bar service was excellent with good advice on locally produced spirits. The food in the restaurant was high in quality and good value. The overall experience was one of the best I have ever had in a hotel and I really hope I get the opportunity to back and stay longer. Read less
