Tsala Treetop Lodge

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

The hotel

Think a treehouse is just for children? Think again. Even the name Tsala Treetop Lodge evokes a sense of romance, magic, and seclusion. And that’s exactly what it delivers. A unique Garden Route getaway, it sits in a forest canopy with views down into the valley and across to distant tree-encrusted hills. Dressed in beautiful stone and wood, it takes you straight to nature – but this retreat is anything but rustic. In fact, its sophisticated design, glass-walled dining room, dedication to luxury, and stilt-topped villas with private pools overlooking the hills, put it firmly in the boutique hotel bracket. It’s not just the views and treetop setting that make this location special though; it’s also between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, by Knysna Elephant Park, making it an ideal spot for experiencing some of the Garden Route’s most popular highlights.

Let me start by saying that this is in no way a 5 star hotel. It is a 4 star at best. Plugs hanging off the wall, Aircon not working properly just to state a few. To top all of this off we had money stolen from the room. Even after calling the manager they have not sorted it. 2 days no response you would expect much more from a 5 star rated… Read more

Very disappointed and definalty the low point of the holiday. Even worse than this, reading previous reviews and one states exactly the same on booking.com. I will not be recommending this place to anyone and warn you to stay away. Read less

We couldn’t speak more highly of Tsala Treetop Lodge if we tried. On arrival, we were blown away, not only by the place itself but also by our warm welcome. Lisa welcomed us with open arms, offered us a drink of our choice and then brought us to our lodge. This was not only a room but a haven of tranquility and a little peace of heaven. We had a living area, an outdoor balcony , an outdoor pool, our bedroom, a huge bathroom area and an outdoor shower area. Lisa explained everything thoroughly for us, she was so attentive , friendly and warm, she booked all our activities for us, was on hand for anything we needed at any time of the day or night and nothing was ever too big or too small for Lisa or any of the rest of the team. They really took care of us on our honeymoon. We arrived to champagne in our room with a lovely welcome note and some light nibbles which made it all the more special. There were four restaurants on site but we decided to stay in Tsala treetop restaurant for our first night. They really made it a very special experience for us. We were greeted with canapés and a drink before we were called to dinner. We were given a 5 course meal which was cooked by chef Kevin and it was exquisite. Each night before bed, a different homemade desert was left on our pillow with a handwritten note to wish us a good nights sleep. We both fell in love with a drink called Amarula which we would have in coffee and on our last night as a really nice gesture and a lovely touch we came back to our lodge to find a lovely note and a bottle of amarula waiting for us there. We cannot rate this place or the people more highly!! Thank you Lisa , Bo Bo, Fary, Queen and Harmony for making our honeymoon stay so special and for making it a most unforgettable and memorable experience. We are forever grateful to you all. Went to Tsala for two nights prior to Gorah Elephant Camp. The standards set at Hunter Hotels are exceptional. Accommodation, Food and service all 5 star and we will certainly return next time we are in South Africa. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable.

Service is so incredible from the minute you step into this establishment. It's also available around the clock. No matter how beautiful a place or the service is, I hardly feel like going back to it in my travels. Tsala Treetop Lodge has certainly changed that one for me. I would go back in a heartbeat. No matter how beautiful a place or the service is, I hardly feel like going back to it in my travels. Tsala Treetop Lodge has certainly changed that one for me. I would go back in a heartbeat. Pity we can't always be on holiday. Listen, do yourself and perhaps your loved one too, a great favour, book yourself in this place. Their restaurant also dishes out outstanding food. There's another restaurant not far from them (a short walk away) called Zinzi, do go there as well. Read less

We weren't booked into Tsala. We were booked into Hunter's Country Lodge, but as soon as we arrived there, we knew it wasn't for us. The manager at Hunter's was happy to offer us a room at Tsala and when we arrived (its in the same grounds), Karin the manager was ready to greet us. What a beautiful place. I loved the rooms with their beautiful outlook across the forest. Private infinity plunge pool and comfortable sun beds on one deck and a table and chairs on another. Comfortable sitting room with big squashy chairs, woodburner (which we needed as it was cold), fully stocked mini bar and lots of goodies to eat. A very comfortable bedroom and lovely bathroom. Karin was probably the best manager I have ever come across; just there at the right time with ideas of what to do and where to go and offers of a nice cup of tea and cake or a glass of wine. All of the other staff are genuine and friendly and all seem happy to be working there. There are 4 restaurants on the site. Fine dining and light bites at Hunters; Zinzi the Italian in it's own building (very tasteful) and Tsala's own restaurant which is excellent. Breakfast too was a delight. There are lots of places to sit and relax and beautiful gardens to walk around if you feel so inclined. On our last day, my washing disappeared and turned up again all washed and dried without my even asking. There are one or two things that need a bit of updating but, to be honest, it's pretty much perfect as it is!! Read less
