Port Elizabeth’s best beachfront hotel, the Beach Hotel, is just the sort of hotel I would like to own. It has a great beachfront location, close to many amenities & attractions, a beautiful ocean view over Algoa Bay with close beach access & a nice seawalk to stroll, yet only some 10 mins by car, both to the airport & downtown. The BH is a wonderful design, build some 100 years ago & family-owned since 1958, & has 58 rooms, a perfectly-sized outdoor pool, pleasant courtyard, & open car park with ample parking, guarded 24hours by people who are also quick to help with sticky doors or loads of groceries. The management have assembled a culinary & service team any of the great hotels would be proud to have. PE is an area of extreme poverty, largely among the black population& I know from conversations just how hard it is for many of the BH staff to get to work from the outlying townships, built during apartheid to house black citizens at a distance, far from the town centre where most of the jobs are, yet never did I see anything but grace, with staff, mostly black, going out of their way to do what ever they could for guests. I got to know the hotel & it’s staff fairly well over some two weeks as my lovely cousin, Glen - on my paternal side - when I emailed him to tell my mother was ill & I was flying to SA from Vancouver to be with her after she had been rushed to a hospital in PE, said he would fly in to met me & would book me a hotel to stay in. That hotel was the BH. My day began early with a swim in the wonderful pool, just steps from my spacious room, with a nicely-stocked en suite bathroom. I would then have a very early breakfast so I could get to my mother. All breakfast staff were terrific, even that early, & the breakfast were sumptuous, with everything on offer from the full English, through great stewed fruits, well-made & tasty porridges, a great selection of yoghurts & the usual assortment of cereals. One server stood out, someone I got to know well as I was the only one that early & she had a little time to talk. I was amazed to find out what she had to go through to get there from the township for 6 & totally blown away she was there in her black& white outfit with such grace, making sure I had everything I wanted. The woman, Yvonne, who cleaned the rooms had the same level of grace, happy to get laundry done ASAP. I still think of them both, often even though it is almost nine years ago. All the staff were extraordinary from the front desk, to bartenders to all the servers at all three of the places to eat - the Crest, the Verandah & the Ginger. Its website, calling it guests dearest friends, tell them to sit tight, be safe & watch for further information but it is expecting to be reopening on April 18. Let’s hope. Stayed here for a week in early January Check in was straight forward and we were immediately delighted with our room. A good size with all the amenities you need. A good start. The hotel is over 100 years old and has maintained it's charming old feel but in a totally modern way. We loved the lay out and decoration During the week we ate in the hotel numerous times and were never disappointed with what was served. The only frustration was not being able to get a table in the Ginger Restaurant which was fully booked every night Final word goes for the staff here who could not do enough for you in particular Rambo the Concierge and the incredible Yvonne our housekeeper. Their kindness and humour made our stay - thank you. Read less

Stayed 1 night only. Room is clean, comfortable size, equipped with big bed (proper hard matrass, nice). Check water inside kettle next time, was dirty with sediments. So that 3/5 only. Sanitary staff is clean, prepared for guest. Reception guys are polite and helpfull. For dinner I recommend Verandah restaurant, reasonable priced and tasty.

Reception and Ginger staff very helpful. Restaurant fully booked that evening but hardly any waiting. Only down side is that there is no lift but staff available for heavy cases. Will definitely return when next in PE
