The African Pride is probably the best in town. - The location is great, with bars and restaurants all round with walkable access - Lovely interior decor around the hotel. The art in the rooms is a bit odd with the “fat lady” in the bathroom and “burglar” in front of the safe. But kind of quirky in a good way - Good food, Johannesburg style.… Read more

Excellent hotel in a great location. The hotel has all the amenities (except for gym). staff is super friendly, the rooms are clean and provide ample space. Only had breakfast, but that provides a great choice. Been here twice now and didn't disappoint.

This location is great for dining, walking, and shopping. Very easy to grab a Starbucks or a bite to eat at any number of restaurants. The hotel itself ... Clean. Comfortable. Pool open until 6pm. This location is great for dining, walking, and shopping. Very easy to grab a Starbucks or a bite to eat at any number of restaurants. The hotel itself ... Clean. Comfortable. Pool open until 6pm. Hadedas in the courtyard (birds that sound like a baby crying). First off - arrived from the states - so it was early evening. Wanted to sit and grab a drink with my teenager. That is a NO at this hotel. No children in the cool lounge with outdoor seating. This was not disclosed. The restaurant is ONLY if you are eating dinner and we had dinner reservations off property. They were not even nice about it. Didn't offer to let us buy something and sit by the pool area. Next morning - jetlagged and woken at 8am by housekeeping repeatedly knocking on the door. Persistent every few minutes. It was also my 50th birthday which no one at the hotel seemed to realize or care about. No usual "bonvoy" note in the room. Nothing. Oh - and there was NO HOT WATER because the gas line in the area was being worked on. NOT TOLD TO US AT CHECKIN. So now I am tired, grumpy and dirty. Came back from working and playing - and no apology note. Nothing. Just go ahead and ignore the fact there was no hot water? And I had to meet people dirty? Niiiice. We left for Cape Town the next day and returned for our last night. The front desk was rude and would not return the copy they took of my drivers license and passport. If you copy these, you should return them. So many nice hotels in J'burg, I won't be returning to this hotel. Read less

I recently stayed here for 3 nights. It’s just a beautiful hotel and you couldn’t find nicer staff anywhere. They were just delightful. I booked through Marriott and got excellent rates. This review is channeled mostly to the road "Marriott" warrior. One who literally lives in Marriott hotel's all year long (Platinum to Ambassador). Other travelers may find some value in this too. If your tax bracket falls into where your life problems are not money related, then the only part you will find of value is Service as everything else would be "paid" for. From Airport: Uber. Rates have gone up (since December 2018). From my understanding, still cheaper than taxi and less laborious than the Gautrain +Uber. There is Taxify....maybe the next trip then I will opine.....of course, you could always use the hotels car service. Check in: Very smooth. I did the mobile check-in so most of my paperwork was set. i just had to show my passport. Then they run through the required script of hotel benefits and amenities. Then you are on your way. With mobile checking....it is a 10 min or less process (standing in line is not included in the timeline) Regarding Upgrades: I attempted to use my Marriott upgrade certificates, but the hotel rejected it. Suffice it to say, upon arrival, I was not upgraded. Part of the script was to notify me that I was granted my "High floor" request that is in my profile. This was very, very disappointing. Very. Regarding Breakfast: This hotel does not have a lounge. So you are given coupons (Platinum and above only) for the continental breakfast (CB). For those of "us" who are used to the included breakfast in the morning at hotels like this will be very disappointed/irritated. To be fair, if you are on a diet or watching what you eat, the CB will be fine (if not quite good), however, to get the hot breakfast, there is an additional stipend of cash that you will have to permanently separate yourself from. Not much, but annoying enough...and after all that, it is just OK. So...if this is your hangup, you may want to consider somewhere else. If you have Hilton Gold/Diamond status, the Hilton in Sandton would satisfy the upgrade and breakfast concerns.....just fyi. This for me was even more very very disappointing. I mean...very. Regarding Service: If this is your thing....you will be content. You may not completely enjoy the breakfast and what you had to do to get the hot breakfast, and/or not getting an upgrade, but you will like the staff service. So, from the front desk to the dining to the housekeeping (when you see them) to the front door gentlemen, there was service with a smile. No complaints there at all. Room: It's not the US style spacious room (at least my room), but it is large enough. If you like to take baths (as opposed to shower) you will like the tub. Slight exaggeration, but it looks like it could take 3 people. The shower is big and but has not hand shower....just rain shower style....which is nice. Closet space is not an issue here. There is plenty of space there. Interestingly, the work table is stylish but small (if you are the type to spread your stuff around your laptop.) To be clear (and in summary)...there is much to like about the hotel from the service to it's surrounding (safe) with lots of shopping and restaurants to choose from (ate at the Ocean Basket for dinner....nice!!), however if you are a guest with Platinum status and above expecting upgrades and also expecting full Breakfast, then this may be an issue for you and not the hotel to leverage. Fortunately I have status with Hilton, so I have options, which you may not. I am not sure if the Protea "Marriott" hotels follow the same model, if so, then the only option is a non Marriott where you have status. Safe Travels..... Read less
