This hotel is old and tired. They are undergoing a massive much needed renovation and should close down for the period as the building works begin at 8am and are loud. The check in staff overcharged me, and then tried to spin a story that the extra amount was a tourist levy - which as a seasoned traveler I knew it wasn’t. After arguing with me… Read more

The check in staff overcharged me, and then tried to spin a story that the extra amount was a tourist levy - which as a seasoned traveler I knew it wasn’t. After arguing with me they eventually admitted that they had overcharged me and it was a mistake that would be reversed. I’m still waiting.... As a Platinum Elite Marriott member I received zero recognition or treatment. I had to ask for the breakfast voucher, they offer no welcome gift. The staff were surly when I questioned this. The rooms are tired and feel worn out. The shower leaked and the water smelt like sewerage. Read less

The Protea Wanderers I stayed at the hotel and didn’t have a great experience. Here are my reasons for this. The good: - Breakfast was good. They have the standard fruit selection, cold meats, chef to make eggs to your liking and a limited selection of muffins, croissants etc. Service from Albert in the restaurant was great... He was such a pleasure to have around after a not so great experience. The bad: - Check in was ok. The receptionist wasn’t very interested in me. She mentioned that I had a nice comfortable room, but it was anything but that. - When I arrived at the room, it was VERY hot. I immediately went to the aircon, tuned it on, waited for 15 minutes and it was blowing warm air, and after speaking to the maintenance guy, he mentioned that that rooms been giving issues for a while and no one can sort the aircon out. - With the aircon being broken, I wanted to call reception and the phone was also broken. I called reception from my mobile, told them that the phone was broken and their response was ‘oh’... And that was it. When the maintenance guy came around, he mentioned that the room has issues so he’s not too sure why people are always booked in that room. I don’t want to make any cash flow assumptions. - After the aircon issue, I was placed in another room, the aircon again was not working, moved to another room which was finally sorted. This took 40 minutes to sort out. - The rooms are old, which is an understatement. You can instantly tell that the hotel hasn’t been upgraded in years. You’ll see in the pics attached that the bathroom is old, the shower is badly maintained, the aircon is the old system which is very loud, the tv is old (and doesn’t have a clear picture)... I can go on and on. - I called for iron and the receptionist said he’ll see if they have someone to bring it to me... Yip, I couldn’t believe that. - There’s no where close to enough plug points. There’s 1 two prong, 1 UK port and one normal SA port. - See the attached pic. The towels were filthy. - I found a cockroach in the bathroom, which you’ll see in the attached pic. I honestly wouldn’t stay here again. If I had a conference at the same venue, I’ll stay at a different hotel and sit in traffic instead of going through this again. This is the furthest from value for money. Read less

I would say it has a great location advantage of being in the same premises with Wanderers Club. Because of it being in such a huge area, it is easier to go for a run or just enjoy a stroll outside. It is very convenient to use their free shuttle to nearby areas like Sandton City, Rosebank Mall and anywhere within 5kms radius, the drivers are very accommodative and friendly. Their restaurant manager during breakfast is an asset. The drinking glasses had a bad smell and one day we complained the same to manager. Even she noticed the smell; apologised and explained what could be the reason and took care that the problem never repeated in our entire stay. Their attitude is great in welcoming the feedback and in their eagerness to improve the service. The property is a bit old fashioned, but when we were there the renovation works have started. We were in Guest room - King, it is a bit small for long stays. I felt that their reception staff could be more proactive in getting back to a guest requests than guest contacting them again and again. We used the laundry service multiple times and it was quick. The only thing we were not that happy is their room service, the options were less and the food we ordered was not up to our expectations. Read less

Its location does not make walks outside in the dark advisable, but a hotel shuttle offers guests a safe trip to the city centre every hour. Rooms are of medium size and equipped comfortably enough. Food at breakfast or dinner times is of fairly good quality, although my Chicken Tikka Masala resembled this delicious traditional Indian dish in no way and seemed to have used a starved chicken which was then overcooked. Bad luck, I like to think. My wife's pasta was much better. Read less

I was upgraded to a Junior Suite - and it was BIG, with plenty of wardrobes and drawers (probably the most spacious wardrobe capacity I've seen on all my travels). the quality of the room was good, with contemporary design. The bathroom had a separate shower cabin and a bathtub. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food at the hotel's restaurant - both breakfasts and a la carte menu (e.g. had one of the best filet steaks ever). A cozy bar makes for a good place for leisure or business meetings. The outdoor pool is a little bit too small and too cold - but must be refreshing on a hot day. The gym is rather decent (for a hotel), with a few cardio and resistance machines plus a range of free weights, cable machines and a Smith's machine (the gym gets crowded in the mornings as it appears external paid visitors are coming as well). All in all, very satisfied. Read less
