Mjejane River Lodge

Kruger and surrounds, South Africa

The hotel

Spectacularly located, observe Africa in its rawest form at the Mjejane River Lodge! This is 'Big Five' territory at its best with sunrise and sunset game-drives getting you as close as possible to the abundance of wildlife not just in Kruger Park itself but also in the lodge’s unfenced private game reserve. The lodge itself is small and intimate with only 17 guest rooms, each one featuring a private patio from which to enjoy fantastic river views. Here you can relax with a sundowner of your own, listening to the whooping of hyenas or the trumpeting of elephants – nothing short of magical! When the heat becomes too much take a dip in the swimming pool or find yourself a shady spot, perfect for snoozing. Meals are served in the restaurant or head to the camp fire, located in a picturesque grove of trees to swap tales and feast on local cuisine under a perfectly starlit sky.

Unfortunately there were just an attrition of let downs that mean you pay A LOT for an average experience: On the first day I told Porsche (our hostess) I would like to book a bush walk (and made it know that this was the priority for my trip). She said that would be fine, on the second day it hadn’t been booked, but she assured me she was have it organised for the next day - which then it wasn’t and everyday there was excuse. I would be told at 7pm at night so I could not call round and organise for myself. I ended up going on an additional game drive because the walk ‘fell through’, but then the hostess did not communicate with the game drive host who was flustered when I turned up at 5am (to be told no water had been packed because I hadn’t been expected). Things like a take away lunch take an hour to organise. The food is unremarkable. There is not one particular element, it just sadly only deserves 3 stars Read less

We enjoyed our time at the hotel but two things were disappointing. The website advertises private access to Kruger park. This wasn’t open so we had to drive two hours to get there and back. My wife and I were looking for a getaway to the Kruger Park surrounds. We try a different place each time. We saw Mjejane online and the photos looked great. We decided to try it out in December 2019. The location is fantastic and the view (luckily we had a view) was spectacular. Unfortunately, that is where it ended. It is not cheap and for the price we paid we were VERY DISAPPOINTED. The food was poor. To have 2 of the 3 meals per day as a very limited buffet bearing in mind the price being paid is awful. The food was dry and poorly presented. The staff were very poorly trained so I cannot complain about them personally, and the blame should be at management. On our 2nd morning we opted not to take the 5am drive into the Kruger, hoping to have a lie in. At 05h30 I had to leave our room and ask the 4 staff in reception to please respect that we are trying to sleep. The noise they were making was shocking, knowing there were guests sleeping. The game drives were good and the guides very knowledgeable. We visit the Kruger at least twice a year so the lure was not the Kruger, but rather a relaxing getaway for my wife and I. Unfortunately we will not return to Mjejane. It has amazing potential but is poorly run. For the price there are much better options. Darryl Read less

If anyone gets the chance to go out this way please book this house. It was amazing and more than we could have needed. Booked game drives and saw the big 5 in less than 24 hours. Rooms all airconditioned and beautiful. Amazing !!!
