Protea Hotel Edward

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

I hesitated to book this hotel due to the reviews and the picture online, but I decided to give it a try since I’m a Titanium level Marriott Bonvoy member. Glad I did! The customer service was out of the world. Everyone was extremely nice. The front desk was wonderful and made me feel like a Titanium level guest. I had a larger suite facing the sea. Yes, the windows were dirty, but that is to be expected right by the sea. The larger suite was clean and had a nicer bathroom and balcony as compared to the regular rooms. Room service was quick and efficient. My housekeeper was responsive and took care of me well when I needed additional supplies. As a woman traveling alone, I felt very safe while in the hotel. The food in the restaurant was great (get the oxtails!) and the service and drinks in the bar were delicious. I did use the spa in the hotel. While it was basic, the service was good. I received a facial and a 60 mins deep tissue massage and I was very relaxed. I was in town for a conference at the ICC. While it is only a 15 min walk, I decided to catch Uber each day. On my last day, I was checking out of the hotel around 5 am and no one was at the front desk. This was a bit frustrating as my car was waiting and security had to find the gentleman. The other disappointment was that there wasn’t an exercise facility in the building. Read less

Was disappointed with this property. It definitely shows its age. Not sure when the rooms were last updated. The air conditioner made lots of noise, water facing rooms were not well insulated and you could hear street noise on the top guest floor. Hot water pressure was poor. But the normal hospitality extended by Marriott brand properties stops there. You can do better staying elsewhere. Read less

The best sea view one can ask for and next year exactly 01/01/2020 at 00:00 the sky will lit up by the new year Fair-Works. The entire hotel is lit too by the amazing decorations and more one can ask for.

In October, we spent 11 days at the Protea Hotel Durban Edward in a beautiful beachfront-view suite while visiting family. The restaurant was excellent; the front desk was attentive. So here's the "needs improvement" part: housekeeping. Americans like their showers. We asked for extra towels, more than two a day. Every day, housekeeping would remove them. The king bed had just ONE sheet on it. For two nights, I actually slept on the mattress cover, thinking it was the fitted sheet. There was just one teacup and glass. We asked for extra but inadvertently cracked the second glass and left it on the table to be replaced. Housekeeping washed it and put it back out in the room. We ran out of tissues. I left a note. It was ignored. We asked a housekeeper in the hall and put the packet on the bathroom counter. There it sat for the next five days. You could fall off the toilet trying to reach the TP roll. The fridge wasn't working well, and the replacement didn’t do much better. The beach view wasn't visible through the windows because the windows and glass doors were filthy. The floor was grimy along the baseboards. The shower had black mold in the corners and could've used some bleach. We used valet parking for our rental car. The day before we left, I told the valet we'd be in the hotel room for 30 minutes and leaving again, We came back out to find it in the hotel driveway, unlocked. I'd visit again in a heartbeat, and I hope management works on the housekeeping part. Read less

My family and I enjoyed the buffet tremendously. The service was pretty good although fairly busy. I would recommend this establishment to people visiting Durban. We will definitely be returning in the near future. Not bad value for money.
