Protea Hotel Edward

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

My family and I enjoyed the buffet tremendously. The service was pretty good although fairly busy. I would recommend this establishment to people visiting Durban. We will definitely be returning in the near future. Not bad value for money.

Very poor service People booked for didn’t find space because apparently some people didn’t check out like they said they will. Brian prepared from leftover meat from a day before No USB port in hotel room I liked that the hotel had iron and ironing board per room and that one had a choice of what goes into pre-packed breakfast

This hotel is right next to the ocean (see pic). Mornings and evenings you just enjoying the sound of many waters from ocean and noises of excited kids splashing and playing at the beach. The staff was awesome - ordered room service every night - and breakfast was always fresh. It has fitness centre (which I enjoyed very much). It’s refurbished,… Read more

The staff was awesome - ordered room service every night - and breakfast was always fresh. It has fitness centre (which I enjoyed very much). It’s refurbished, yes, but it has this homely feel and touch with ever smiling team ready to serve. I was affected by dust from the carpets (but it’s only that my nose is sensitive to dust mites). The manager was even willing to borrow me cuff links for my black tie event. Bravo 👏to the team, staff and management for a great experience. Read less

The location over the road from the beach is excellent, even though the beach area is a bit grubby. The common ground floor areas like the bar and dining room hark back to older times - high ceilings, wood paneling, wide corridors, nice The rooms however are small and tired. Few power points and small bed. It is also very noisy with street… Read more

I’ve recently stayed at this Protea Hotel Durban twice for business trips this year. It was a lovely stay. They have great views of the promenade and ocean, the staff was very friendly, the food was delicious, the conferencing facilities were welcoming, and the beds were comfortable. The only critique I have is about the maintenance of the building. One thing that gives this hotel a lot of charm is that it is in a beautiful old building with mahogany fittings everywhere, beautiful ceilings, you get what I mean....which makes it a challenge to upkeep. Some additional TLC is needed to get the place in spectacular shape....however the benefits of all of the above outweigh this feature. I will definitely stay there again for other business trips. Thanks for a great stay! Read less
