Protea Hotel Edward

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

This is big, when you must take your bags in during the rain. Wonderful staff. Now the room. It was nice, but not facing the beach. There was so much noise from either outside or ventilation system, or worse, poor insulation. Anyways, the rooms have bar fridges and all. Bizzarely, when taking a shower you must close the door because the fire alarm thinks the smoke from your shower is fire. Maybe time to change air-extractor. Overall, it was good. We did not eat there. Had other plans. Read less

Plusses: - the staff are very nice and I think tried hard in some cases - breakfast was excellent and the dining room is aged but pretty - we got upgraded to a lovely suite due to Marriott status Mixed: - the location on the golden mile is great in many ways, and the views of the beach were great. But the area behind the hotel is quite dodgy. - the hotel needs to be updated - but the outside is being painted, a plus Downsides - we had an issue with our room which was not resolved. Sometimes things can’t be quickly fixed, but communication was iffy and several promises to do something went un-met Read less

I can't recommend anything of this hotel. Not the staff, not the security, not the condition of the rooms, nothing. We felt very unsafe and we couldn't wait to leave. I do not recommend this hotel and will definitely never return.

The only good features of this hotel are the breakfasts and the staff - who are great- helpful and kind. The exception is everyone at reception. The only good features of this hotel are the breakfasts and the staff - who are great- helpful and kind. The exception is everyone at reception. The hotel itself is well overdue for an upgrade/ renovation. Our room, 701 on the top floor, was supposed to be a family room but only had 2 double beds and no room for an additional one. I paid US$220 per night for the room including breakfast, which, in hind side, is double of what the place is worth. After prepaying the room and repeated requests I did not receive a booking confirmation number so I had to call Marriott's customer service who kindly provided me with 2 booking numbers. Protea hotel responded to my last email re booking number 5 days AFTER I returned(!), which just about sums up management's attitude to customer service. Every piece of furniture in the room was damaged or coming apart, the carpet was warn, the airconditioner only produced loud noises and blew hot air no matter what on setting. During the day the heat in the room melted the chocolates... so we ended up staying away from the room during the day and sleeping with the windows open at night. the pool is only open until 6PM so it was closed by the time ew returned form organised tours. As the hotel is facing the ocean it was very noisy at night but at least the noise was coming from natural source, the ocean, not a faulty aircon. I asked reception to book us a cab to the airport the day before our departure, checked on the day to make sure there is a booking, was reassured both times that the taxi is booked for us only to find that there was none when we were ready to leave. reception claimed that they had no record of the request but after 15 minutes they managed to get us an uber. The one and only time reception made an effort was when they mistyped our creditcard number and kept chasing us saying our card was declined. My company issued iPhone and ipad both refused to connect to the free wifi deeming it unsecured and unsafe. All things considered this hotel gives a bad name to Marriott. However, the hotel's location is good - its on the Golden Mile, opposite the beach and there are many restaurants in walking distance. We walked on the beach and to the restaurant at night on the main street and felt safe, but were strongly warned to never venture into the small side streets after dark. There is a post office, a supermarket, liquor store (most drinks at duty free piece or less!), a basic clothes store only 3 minutes walk from the back entrance of the hotel. There is a Spar supermarket a further 3 minutes walk around the corner from the clothes shop. I will never stay in the Protea Edwards hotel again - there are a number of good brand hotels in the area, I will give them a chance any day. Read less
