Protea Hotel Edward

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

Pros: The location of the hotel was very nice. It was beachfront and plenty to do around the hotel with access to many restaurants and activities in the area. Breakfast buffet was very good. The room was very large as 1 bedroom suite. Cons: The hotel itself was very old and not very clean. My shower ceilong was leaking and the shower door would not close properly. The carpet felt dirty and the furniture was very old/unclean to the point that I didn't feel like sitting on the chairs. The TV in the bedroom was smeared with some sort of cleaning liquid that would not allow a very clear picture. The TV in sitting room was not connected properly as there was a lot of static in the audio. Also, the AC did not work at all. The hall way outside of the room was much cooler than inside the room. My best hotel stay to date. The staff here were so friendly and went the extra mile to help. My car was parked for me and check in was hassle free. Rooms were clean. Food was amazing. I will be staying here for all my Durban visits ❤️❤️

I booked this hotel while on Business Trip, I must say I was fooled by the location which I thought would be a nice and peaceful seafront, the area is actually dangerous and at night, you better stay in your room. Rooms are not cleaned properly throughout my 5 nights stay, the hotel lift is grumpy and take ages to be closed. No Customer Service whatsoever, I was booked on B&B and due to Ramadan and the fact that I was fasting, I asked the Front Office manager during Check in whether I could have Breakfast earlier on than the breakfast time, I was told not possible and that if I wanted any food before breakfast, I had to order from Room Service, I stayed the week before at a non hotel chain in Cape Town and they used to send me an early breakfast everyday to my room at 04:00 am as they knew I was fasting and my room was on a B&B rate. Overall, bad customer service, old hotel and a lot to improve in cleanliness. Read less

Not good for vegetarians. Menu is limited. Reception is discourteous. House keeping poor. They don’t keep anything in rooms about the hotel amenities. Not helpful to guests who r new to such places. No advisory even

Right on the Indian Ocean, the hotel was in a great location that appeared to be very safe. Breakfast buffet was among the best we have had. The hotel bar was warm and welcoming. Watch the sun rise on a room facing east.
