Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Durban Umhlanga Ridge

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

One of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed in. We booked for three nights and checked out after the first night. The air conditioning did not work. The hotel looks terribly unkempt. It has neither character or appeal and is in serious need for an upgrade. It is in a very bad location and is not recommended. However the staff were extremely… Read more

Myself and my husband stayed for 3 nights early December on a bed and breakfast basis. Check in was quick and easy, our room was average, but had everything we needed. Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. Had to go and find staff to serve us coffee on a couple of occasions as we weren't asked. Would like to say the bar man however in… Read more

Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. Had to go and find staff to serve us coffee on a couple of occasions as we weren't asked. Would like to say the bar man however in the evenings (they have a happy hour every day) was outstanding, unfortunately I don't remember his name, but he was super friendly and chatty, and because we were sat outside on the terrace he came out to see if we wanted more drinks, and brought them out to us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would happily stay here again. Read less

Great service all round. Magnificent à la carte menu and à professional barman in antique surroundings. A tiny roof top pool that could be enlarged, and early morning checkout marred by a greedy inefficient receptionist dropped a star.

We had breakfast this time. We have had dinner and brekkie often. Andrew, the General Manager and Emmanuel, the food and beverage Manager, have certainly got their act perfect. They have a team of staff who go out of their way to please. Every staff is pleasant and caring. The food is amazing, both at dinner and brekkie. If that's enough, the… Read more

If that's enough, the chef comes out to check on our requirements. Because we don't eat certain meats, the chef will make a plan to please you. A must for every famy person. Special attention to satisfy my grandchildren was ever so pleasing. A ten star rating for sure. Read less
