Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Durban Umhlanga Ridge

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The views from the rooftop pool are worth the stay here alone. A perfect spot for a quick dip, the pool’s open to the blue skies above, but sheltered thanks to tall walls, with windows giving you snapshots of the beach, Indian Ocean, and cityscape below. Its Golden Mile setting makes this a popular stopgap, with the sands of the beach just steps away, and ocean views from many guest rooms. Although it’s a modern hotel with all the conveniences that delivers (think high-speed WiFi and a complimentary airport shuttle), it has surprising nods to Victorian elegance inside, with chandeliers, sumptuous sofas, and a wood-panelled bar. And, after visiting nearby attractions like uShaka Marine World and Durban Botanic Gardens, you can return to Protea Hotel Durban Edward by Marriott for seafood and steak specialities at its brasserie-style restaurant.

Decided to go along to the Edward Hotel for dinner, Saturday afternoon, to my surprise this is such a beautiful historic venue, service was excellent, we chose dishes from the a la carte menu, well presented meal, overall it’s a great place to enjoy a meal or catch up with a cup of tea

The service at this hotel is first rate, nothing too much trouble. Location is right on the beachfront and central. Room was good, only minor concern was a lack of hot water at times. Breakfast selection and service was excellent. Gym a little small but in the whole, I'd recommend it

We enjoy the buffet meals at the Protea Edward Hotel. The Saturday buffets were a rave with an excellent range of dishes complimented by a variety of salads and delectable desserts. Of recent we noticed a significant scaling down in the foods on offer. To compensatefor this disappointment is the presence of Mr George Mahlala. I deem this as an excellent addition to the kitchen staff. He is very creative and his culinary skills have left a definite impression on us. We compliment the hotel on securing the services of this talented and passionate chef I thanking George for his excellent presentation and delicious meal he served us, I want to wish him even further success. May you increase the number of patrons at this beachfront hotel. I am looking forward to my next visit. Will enquire whethre George is on duty before I leave home. Compliments and congratulations and sincere gratitude Read less

One of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed in. We booked for three nights and checked out after the first night. The air conditioning did not work. The hotel looks terribly unkempt. It has neither character or appeal and is in serious need for an upgrade. It is in a very bad location and is not recommended. However the staff were extremely… Read more
