The Oyster Box

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The Oyster Box combines colonial charm, impeccable service, lush tropical gardens and a breathtaking seaside setting. A local landmark since 1947, the iconic family-owned Oyster Box Hotel has been impeccably restored to create a luxury modern retreat which has thankfully lost none of its Colonial charm whilst gaining every contemporary comfort. The refurbishment has kept the wrought-iron balustrade and original hand-painted tiles and restored the Ocean Terrace patio that overlooks the stylish infinity pool and ocean beyond. Personal touches, such as the original memorabilia in the Durban July and Union Castle Rooms, are sure to conjure up interesting stories and memories alike. When it’s time to dine, the most obvious place to warm up the palate is the magnificent marbled Oyster Bar, where freshly plucked oysters from the hotel’s very own oyster bed and served with Champagne. Other bars are available with the authentic Chukka Bar and the Lighthouse Bar, which is set overlooking the rocky shores of Umhlanga and the historic lighthouse.

Nearing the end of our epic Southern-Africa Adventure, this was our very last night before the lengthy drive (6/7 hrs) back to Jo'burg, and the even longer long-haul flight Home, out of JNB. A night to savour, luxuriate, cleanse ourselves of the Bush (6 weeks), relax, and indulge in some good old fashioned niceties, was definitely called for. We had hardly slumed it, but - you get the picture, right ? Drove here from iSimangaliso Wetlands & Lake St Lucia area and from joining N2 it was a doddle - smooth, simple and straight-forward. Found The Oyster Box easily enough (off M4), even though this area of Durban has grown a lot since we were last here, passed the Security Gate (it is Durban, remember), and arrived in forecourt – Can I park here ? Sure, wherever you like, simple I know, but said with such a cheery warm manner that, it just felt nice. Dealt with Check-In, luggage taken care of, so up to the Room. Ocean-front was ordered. Room is gorgeous, light, bright, slightly on the compact side, if I’m honest, beautiful soft-furnishings, desk, super bathroom, fresh flowers, fruit and fab view, which from an aesthetic point-of-view looked absolutely fantastic (aka Fab) – sea, rocks, lighthouse, ships in distance, blue sky etc etc, but the wind was so strong that opening the Balcony doors was quite an effort and howling gale made quite an unpleasant noise. Walk on the beach and kite-surfing was off, so we chilled and went for a wander round the Hotel. Everyone we met was charming, welcoming and really genuine – impressed. We wanted to sit outside around the pool and enjoy the view with a cold beer, but that wind was now wickedly strong and getting stronger. All parasols were being moved in, if possible, or tied down – especially on the balcony of the upstairs bar. There is something decidedly Indian, dating from the Colonial past about the place (in a very nice way, I must stress) – it is quite large and imposing, and yet there is an intimacy about it too. Perhaps it is the open corridors and hidden internal Courtyards - very reminiscent of Rajasthan. Afternoon tea was being served & whilst we did not partake, and maybe should not comment, bit it looked fabulous and very tempting with or without the champagne. Our resistance was tested. Apparently and allegedly, so is the ‘Curry Tiffin’, of which I admit to being a fan. We enjoyed a pre-Dinner cocktail on the balcony, an excellent Dinner, a glass or two of wine, a nightcap upstairs, and a deep long sleep in a very comfortable bed. Then a simply fabulous breakfast – so much temptation, in one sitting. Note to Others – Come early, stay for 2 nights (min) and indulge – You’re worth it. I do not know the price we paid, as it was booked as a part of a Complete Itinerary. I wouldn’t hesitate about coming again, though, if that helps. I am not responsible for the Focus in the ancillary Questions on ‘Massage Services’. Most odd & an inappropriate reflection on the Hotel. As a 5 * Hotel, and based on our experience(s), I expect The Oyster Box to be able to provide most Services, or direct you to local options. Read less

My wife and I treat ourselves to the Oyster Box every year and it becomes more pleasurable every time we go. The Guest Relations Manager, Justin Botha, goes above and beyond and i couldn't think of anyone who takes more pride in their work than him. His top priority is always the happiness and comfort of his guests, no questions asked. He is a valuable asset to this hotel and i know many of the guests there would agree. The service is nothing short of impeccable, I sincerely do not see how anyone can have one negative thing to say about this hotel and it's warm and welcoming staff. Of course, always a treat to greet Skabenga in the foyer every visit :) We will most certainly be back there in a hurry next year. Brett & Amy Schoeman Read less

We ate at the Ocean Terrace with a family of 5. Our food was good, but our service was great. Sue really took her time with us and helped us with the menu and culinary recommendations. We sampled a good portion of the menu and the curry bar. The curry bar,in particular, was a favorite.

Had lunch at Ocean terrace and the service & food were outstanding. They were updating the pool area so the view was a bit obstructed but it was still a pleasure. Then went to the Oyster Bar after and enjoyed the light house views
