The Oyster Box

Durban, KwaZulu Natal

The hotel

The Oyster Box combines colonial charm, impeccable service, lush tropical gardens and a breathtaking seaside setting. A local landmark since 1947, the iconic family-owned Oyster Box Hotel has been impeccably restored to create a luxury modern retreat which has thankfully lost none of its Colonial charm whilst gaining every contemporary comfort. The refurbishment has kept the wrought-iron balustrade and original hand-painted tiles and restored the Ocean Terrace patio that overlooks the stylish infinity pool and ocean beyond. Personal touches, such as the original memorabilia in the Durban July and Union Castle Rooms, are sure to conjure up interesting stories and memories alike. When it’s time to dine, the most obvious place to warm up the palate is the magnificent marbled Oyster Bar, where freshly plucked oysters from the hotel’s very own oyster bed and served with Champagne. Other bars are available with the authentic Chukka Bar and the Lighthouse Bar, which is set overlooking the rocky shores of Umhlanga and the historic lighthouse.

The hotel has so many interesting facts, my highlight was meeting Skabenga the beautiful resident cat, what a beautiful elderly gentleman he is, check him out on his instagram! The food is lovely and all effort is made to accommodate ant requests Our only gripe was the staff in the Lighthouse bar, it was as though we was invisible and failed to get served, it was an evening about 6 and not at all busy, we went down to the other bar Just a small blip We recommend this hotel for any amount of stay Read less

Staying at the Oyster Box is like winding back time. It looks and feels like being in the old plantation days, perfectly styled with over stuffed couches, cane furnishings, overhead fans that move the muggy Durban air around. It is perfectly situated overlooking the ocean in Durban where you can enjoy delicious meals with visits from a local troupe of monkeys running along the outdoor veranda looking for titbits of food. The rooms are beautiful airy and spacious. You have to try the afternoon tea which has an unbelievable selection of cakes, pastries and savoury bites. Service is impeccable and the staff are there to look after you 24/7. I would highly recommend staying here. Read less

We only had dinner at this venue - we did not stay overnight. Beautiful hotel. Exceptional staff. Drinks on the terrace with beautiful views. Staff provided binoculars so we could watch fishermen out at sea. Lovely dinner served. We all had the Curry Buffet - lots of choice and delicious! Can't wait to return.
